BG Dual Rate Electricity Meter So Can't Switch Supplier!!

  • Thanks for the info, it all seems very complicated. British Gas have offered to change the meter out for free so I think I'll take up their offer, just it means having to wait three weeks and then another 5 weeks for the switch to Scottish Power and in the meantime I'll be paying BG's increased prices.

The switch date is inside the 5 weeks so it shouldn't affect your prices as long as 5 weeks.

If you have one of the more complex meter types, you may need to do some rewiring at your cost so ask them to confirm if this is needed first.

PM me the details to check your combination if you want to. It is slightly complicated unless you work in that field. Supplier staff get this data provided to them so they don't know either most of the time...but some of us put that data together for them so we have to fully understand it.

  • Sorry I haven't read anything in detail. I'm currently having problems switching for SP for other reasons and have a day night meter. When I signed up to SP over the web I filled in my current details inc day and night and then compared to their tariff. They then worked out I would be cheaper with them. At no point did it say we will have to replace your meter etc etc. They provided a box to fill in both readings and the savings I would make is in the agreement letter they sent. So when they sign you up part of the process is to supply the usage for both day and night.

They do offer economy 7 tariffs but it appears that there are certain types of meters that they do not support and this only comes to light during the switching process.
  • An update on this. After posting that Scottish Power couldn't switch me due to the type of electric meter I had, I re-applied and hey presto! miraculously I am now a Scottish Power customer. They still haven't managed to get me on their billing system after switching me over a month ago. Their customer service seems pretty poor but they were the cheapest fixed tariff that didn't have a cancellation fee (before everybody increased their charges at the end of last year).
