BG Dual Rate Electricity Meter So Can't Switch Supplier!!
Comments
-
Situation since we moved here is that we have been on a single rate tariff with BG, I provide them with readings from both meters, I get charged at one rate not at economy 7 (ie different rates for meter 1 useage compared to meter 2).
Interestingly I decided to try an online quote from SP yesterday, but this time saying that I was on an Economy 7 tariff with 10% night useage - and SP gave me a quote to supply! I'm going to phone them again today and ask how come they'll quote for that but have refused to transfer me.0 -

Your MPAN (less the initial S) should be 21 digits in total.
If the new supplier does not get that, it could be the reason they reject your application.
Otherwise, if the meter time switch code is 022 or 220, then that might be another reason the supplier may reject your application.
When you consult a comparison site, it does not ask for details of your MPAN so will assume you have a meter/tariff that is common across the industry and so switchable.0 -
Energyhelpline says the MPAN should be 21 digits -you only appear to have 20

This link suggests you try contacting the local electricity distributor (not your energy supplier) to find your correct MPAN

I take it from your MPAN your local electricity distributor is UK Power Networks (South East England), but here's a list of all and their contact details.

Don't forget there are dual rate meters other than Economy 7 (for example RHT). Maybe the OP has something like this? If so the OP just needs to get the meter replaced.0

Sorry to bump on this thread but I just happen to have exactly the same issue but I am with EON trying to switch to SP and
received same letter as OP
Eon said they won't change the meter because they have no issues in billing standard rates on a economy 7 meter. I've been with EON for 7 years now and property had economy 7 meter but EOn changed it to a new smart meter (economy 7 again)
I'll phone SP tomorrow but think I won't get anywhere
Is there a way to complain to someone about it to make EON change the meter free of charge, i think is unfair as they installed it in the first place knowing my tariff was not on economy 7....thanks0 -

So, you have 2 meters?
Do you have 2 MPAN's? If so, they shouldn't be giving out standard rates on those and should be removing the off peak meter if its no longer connected to the heating.
E7 meters are just 1 meter.
The other possibility is a more complex meter so how many readings do you have? More than 2?
Users on here are trying to trace your meter based on a data item called Meter Timeswitch Class (MTC) which is possible but you need to answer what I am asking here as well or they may only find 1 half of the problem.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -

You can raise a complaint to Eon and they probably will as its a cheap affair. However, are you aware that you must ensure there is no off peak load anymore?
See this thread where I've raised this to the Eon rep.

Its a grey area of industry compliance and suppliers are operating in different ways. So, if you can get anywhere, take it to the ombudsman as quick as possible for an in dependant decision.
The fee for your referral alone will be far higher.
Eon reps - this is the issue I'm trying to get across. Suppliers are interpreting this in different ways so whilst I appreciate you are acting with good intentions, it can cause problems for those switching away from you. I would suggest that your industry compliance raise it as an issue to Elexon so they can agree the method formally to stop all this.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -

Have you tried switching to a competitors E7 tariff?
Shouldn't be an issue like the OP has.
Then you can ask the new supplier to change the meter and supply you on the single rate tariff you really want.
(SP will charge you for such non-essential change of meter)
Why should Eon be expected to fund a non-essential change of meter for you when they have no need to change the meter, especially as it appears you are keen to leave Eon anyway?0 -
I am with EON at the moment and have an E7 meter but am charged a single rate due to EON adding both readings together.
I am in the process of switching to EDF and they will be putting me on E7 when I switch to them. They have said that after 28 days I can request a meter change free of charge and then they can switch me to single rate billing.0 -

Its good that they are doing this free of charge.
However, you must ensure you have no off peak load wired or the engineer can't do the job.
I don't see why you need to wait 28 days as they can book a meter change as soon as today's date passes your switch date.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0
