Met Police- is this a virus?

Got windows 7. last night screen froze with a message from Met Police that i have been caught doing illegal stuff and will have to pay £100 fine or computer will be confiscated. Loooked like a virus to me.

I opened up in safe mode and did a system restore. It's worked but I 'm concerned how this got through. I've got Microsoft Essentials as my AV software.

Am I safe now? Thanks for help in advance.

I'd download TDSSKiller and Malwarebytes and run them both (separately). What you have downloaded is now commonly referred to as 'Ransomeware' and can be a pain to eliminate completely without editing the registry.

Why does it seem legit to you? It's a widely known scam.

I'm being sarcastic - thought that was fairly obvious.

    Possibly by exploiting a vulnerability.

Download and save SecurityCheck to your Desktop from the link below.

    Link
    • Double click SecurityCheck.exe (XP), or right click & choose "Run as Administrator" (Vista, Win7)
    • Follow the onscreen instructions inside the command box.
    • A Notepad file should open automatically called checkup.txt
    • Post the contents of that Notepad file.

  • Hi guys, My desktop has just been hit with this and it's frozen my PC (am sending this message from my wifes laptop).

How do I do a system restore or open in safe mode as as soon as I boot up it goes straight to this screen and freezes.

Any advices would be greatly appreciated.

In the vast majority of cases it is F8, in rare cases this is overridden by modifications carried out by the OEM. Once you power up your computer just keep taking F8 every second so that you don't miss your opportunity. Bear in mind that you can only use system restore if your computer has been set up to record system restore points. If you have never tinkered with this setting then it is likely that you will have restore points.
