Suitabilty of a cocker spaniel

We have a black cocker, she is 3 today! She is very loving and tolerates the toddler really well and has no problem with our new cats who we got around April. She's ok being left alone for a few hours and does love a cuddle on the sofa. She can be a bit stubborn but will do anything for my husband
she normally has about an hour's walk a day (not this week or last due to me doing jury duty) and playtime. She loves people and all the people around here love her, she has a mental map of all the people who make a massive fuss of her and is always looking for new friends
She is a b*gger for stealing food though, argh, and those eyes, when I was having my tea last night she looked like she was going to cry

have you thought about a 'Clumber Spaniel'? a friend had one and called it 'The laziest dog on the planet'! sweet natured and loved attention, but the only dog I have ever known who tried to hide when the lead was produced!
my friends dog was a bit aged when I knew it - but they are pretty dogs and friend claims that even in its best days it was never keen on long walks!0 -
and need a lot of stimulation, like most dogs! I have a springer, and his puppy years were somewhat trying - more so the 'teenage' parts, iyswim!! But, he's a fantastic dog, and I love him to bits! He's calm, well trained, and a real cuddle bunny. It depends how you train them...He can go for miles and miles, but he doesn't *have* toIs that a light I see at the end of the tunnel?;)0

I really wanted a cocker spaniel, but my mum wanted a dog which wouldn't shed. So, we have gone for a cocker/poodle cross.
He is 22 weeks old tomorrow and he is wonderful. Although he is very very tiring and needs alot of attention he is equally happy to be left alone so long as he has something to amuse him.
Some days he looks like a complete cocker, other days a poodle.0 -
If you are looking at a cavy, then PM me, as I know a breeder who is expecting one litter and has a three week old litter. All KC reg and all pedigrees. Although about £800 a puppy. It's where my Mum got her current dog from and she is a really lovely lady. All her dogs are treat like babies.Married the lovely Mr P 28th April 2012. Little P born 29th Jan 20140

Jemb, thanks for pm, have sent you a further rambling one!!0 -
We are the same age as you and have a cocker spaniel. I had always had German Shepherds or Labradors before, but we wanted a smaller dog. Like other people say they are very engergetic, sociable and affectionate. Ours has a nack of finding disgusting things every time we take him for a walk - anything too decomposed to eat he will roll in! I think male dogs are more inclined to do this than females. I am very fond of him but I wish I'd had another GSD instead.0

Thanks Cassan, my very first choice would be a lab as I think they tick all the boxes personality and looks wise for me but unfortunately too much exercise involved. We have missed the boat really
I think we have decided on a less energetic dog especially as I have to have a bunion op sometime next year and so all walking will be down to hubby for a while. Thinking now of a Cavalier King Charles and will post separately about that
Have been utterly delighted with all replies, thank you very much everybody0 -

We've got an 18month Clumber, and he does that! Once he's out, he's like any other gun dog, and loves romping in the woods, swimming, retrieving sticks etc. But in the house, he's perfectly happy just getting stuck into a chew or supervising whatever it is we're doing:rotfl:
They're a rare(ish) breed, but I really think they're a perfect pet dog.0 -
We live with MIL who has two. They HAVE to be walked twice a day or they won't settle down but once they've been walked love nothing more than a very long nap like Henry here.

They love their cuddles, are extremely loyal and are absolutely brilliant with the kids. They love nothing more than having a good old swim and Freddie (the bigger of the two) thinks nothing of lying in a puddle if there's no pond nearby. They both love my pom (who thinks he's a cocker and will jump in the streams with them - great for his coat) and all of them are scared of the cats.
