SIM only contracts
I signed up for a 12 month SIM only contract with O2 in May 2010.
My tariff is £10.21 for:
300 Anytime Minutes
Unlimited UK Texts
Unlimited O2 to O2 calls
and Unlimited Blackberry Data.
I have kept the contract rolling and purchased the phones myself as I am really happy with my tariff and it works out a lot cheaper.
Now, I wish to change from a Blackberry to an iPhone and purchase the phone myself but I would need to change the Blackberry Data plan to an iPhone/Smartphone Data plan. I have contacted O2 several times and asked if they will 'swap' my data plan without changing my tariff or monthly cost but I am being told they 'can't' or they are just unwilling. I have even offered to sign up another 12 months but they won't change just the data, they want to change my whole tariff and sign up for another 12 months; so for an extra £3.29 per month I would get:
300 minutes, unlimited texts - the same as what I get now, but they will reduce my unlimited O2 calls to 500 O2 calls and the data would be reduced to 100MB. So I would be paying more for less. To me that is downgrading, not upgrading.
I would be happy to sign up to the above tariff if the data was 250MB - 500MB (just so I know I don't need to be carefull when using internet and apps that require an internet connection) but this would be another £6 on top of the tariff
I have said I will cancel my contract if I find a better deal else where but they just don't seem interested in keeping their long standing customers of 10 years. Infact I do believe they are wanting me off my current tariff even though I don't use half of my allowance each month. Am I really asking too much?

Asking too much? No. But they aren't required to give you what you want and only have to offer you what tariffs they currently sell.0

I know they don't have to give a customer what they want but it seems they would rather lose a customer of 10 years than 'swap' a data plan, I won't be getting anymore than what I get now, infact I will be getting less and signing up for another 12 month contract.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -

Do it. O2 don't have decent sim only plans at the bottom end.
Certainly you will need more data than 100mb. Just check out all the other networks, bearing in mind that the main thing is reception. Try it out - don't rely on coverage charts.
You don't need to stay with them if you are getting a new handset. Look at the other big 4, then Tesco, Virgin, GiffGaff etc
Every time any contract ends - mobile, insurance, utilities, anything - go get yourself the best deal. By all means, you give your current supplier a chance to meet the competition. That's your loyalty to them.
But if they can't or won't then walk away. It's your money and to them you are a number. It's business, not personal.0 -
Virgin (T-Mobile/Orange signal) do 250 minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB data on a 1 month contract for £10
Three do 200 minutes, 5000 texts and 500MB for £9.90 on a 1 month contract (£6.90 on a 12 month contract)
Talkmobile (Vodafone signal) do 200 minutes, 500 texts and 500MB for £8 on a 1 month contract
Tesco Mobile (O2 signal) do 250 minutes, 5000 texts and 500MB for £10 on a 1 month contract or £7.50 on a 12 month contract.
Plenty of choice there for you, no need to stay with O2 if they won't give you what you want.0 -
If bet you stuck your SIM in an iPhone it would still work, data and all.0

I have found O2 the best for coverage, I always have full signal at home and when I am out. I would prefer to stay with O2 but as they can't give me what I want I will have to look into changing networks to find a tariff that suits me.
I can't get a signal around my area with T-Mobile so can't look there, I won't go back to Vodafone due to terrible Customer Service I received few years back. I don't think Orange is great for signal around my area but I am not sure about the other networks you mention above so will have to order some free sims and try them in my phone.
I don't need more minutes, 500 texts would probably do me as I use messaging apps and as you say I would certainly need more than 100MB so I don't need to be too carefull. The only thing I would miss about my current tariff is the unlimited O2 to O2 calls which I won't be able to get on any other network obviously unless it was unlimited x-net minutes. If bet you stuck your SIM in an iPhone it would still work, data and all.
My free WIFI would work but not sure I would still get free data on another phone other than a Blackberry.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
Giff gaff uses o2 and you will get what you wantDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Giffgaff will give 250 minutes for the same price, not 300.0

Check what Orange's signal is like, if you can get a signal for them you will get one from T-Mobile.I can't get a signal around my area with T-Mobile so can't look there,
Talkmobile use Vodafone's signal but they have their own customer services, not sure how good they are though.I won't go back to Vodafone due to terrible Customer Service I [/received few years back.
How many minutes of O2-O2 calls do you use?I don't need more minutes, 500 texts would probably do me as I use messaging apps and as you say I would certainly need more than 100MB so I don't need to be too carefull. The only thing I would miss about my current tariff is the unlimited O2 to O2 calls which I won't be able to get on any other network obviously unless it was unlimited x-net minutes.
And the price will be going up soon.Giffgaff will give 250 minutes for the same price, not 300.0
