  • ive never known a renault key with a button fob to be completely sealed how would you gain access to the battery.

the receiver for the transmitter fob is near the ignition barrel, having it on your keyring near the spare key should be enough

I know! It's really strange! The key cutting man couldn't understand how there was no way to take the key apart but there really isn't! I think it would have to literally be sawed apart along the ridge on the outer edge, then glued back together.

I will put the proper fob and the new key onto the same ring and see if that works. Thanks so much. :T

I'm going to guess your key looks like this....

    d740b4ef.png4e61117c.png
Thats my key, which fits my T Reg 1999 Clio.
It does come apart, I appreciate that on first glance it looks like it doesn't and I had a similar head scratching moment when I came to change my battery. Look carefully on the 2nd pic and there is an arrow.

    1) Make sure there is no keyring through the hole
    2) Hold the key in your Right hand with the arrow facing up
    3) Put your left index finger under the key blade and your left thumb above.
    4) With your right thumb push hard against the cover end (by the hole for the keyring). the 2 halves should then slide apart.

    **edited to add**
Thinking about it, I think what you are describing is the same as my spare, that doesn't come apart and has no blipper for central locking. Both the key in the pic and the spare are 100% original and came with the car.
  • THANK YOU!!! You are right - although I can't actually do it, I think the two halves slide apart. :o

My keys don't look like yours - they really are totally smooth, except for the same "renault" writing that yours has. There's no arrow, and they don't have that bit that sticks out next to the key blade. My car is totally manual locking for every door.

I can't believe that I didn't know these keys had batteries in them, or that the battery hasn't died yet! Are you supposed to put new ones in? Bearing in mind my keys are now 14 years old...

If you don't have central locking I wouldn't think you'd need the battery. But yes, for me I replace mine every couple of years but my central locking isn't very responsive at the best of times so a new battery often helps. You have to be on top of the car to unlock it sometimes lol
I think they fixed the issue because my sons 07 Clio Campus you can unlock from 20ft away!

Thanks. I have been to the key cutting place this morning and discovered that the black fob is a totally sealed unit. I can't open it or prize it in half. The chap has made me a duplicate key with just a regular flat fob, which I know will at least open the car doors, but I'm wondering how close the immobiliser unit in the spare fob needs to be to the key for the car to start? Probably a very blonde question (sorry!) but if I had the proper fob in the car, less than 1 foot away from the ignition, would that be close enough for the signal to still work? Or, if I literally taped the fob to the replacement key?! This replacement key only cost me £8 so I thought it was worth a try ;)

If it doesn't work I'll contact the place you've suggested SailorSam (didn't see your post before getting this key).
run a razor around the ridge until it splits pull out the transponder, drill a hole near the blade in the new key and areldite the transponder in.

    you have to get creative
  • no central locking then no transponder other than the chip inside the black part.

ence why this key is not sperable.

there will be a way to cut the fob open to insert the blade back into the fob but do not damage that immoniliser chip. look on youtube to do this task!.
  • Well the results of my experiment are 50% success... (I'm a glass half-full girl!) The key opens the car door, but won't start the car (with the proper fob on the same keyring as the new key). I cannot, for the life of me, slide the two pieces of the key fob apart though. I think it's much harder without the blade to hold on to (as that's the bit that fell out).

My key is older than the ones on the site that SailorSam recommended, but I think I'll send them an email and see if they can help me.

Nice to have a spare that will open the doors though. That would have come in handy last winter when I managed to lock the key in with the car running to defrost it. OH spent 5 minutes on YouTube and figured out how to break in, which was a little bit scary and a huge relief all at once ;)

  • Have finally managed to separate the key fob into two halves. Can see the chip, and the code. There is no battery though. I've sent a message to the site suggested by SailorSam and hopefully - with the key code - they can make me a new spare. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

here you should see the insert for the blade. you just need blade to be made and inserted back into the slot. but if you wish to have a complete key made thats upto you, and then have three keys to the car. wich may be a talking point advantage come selling it.
