I was looking at these for my camera as its a pretty good deal, if they are any good - has anyone used this brand before?

Hi Pthree no I haven't but I've bought some dodgy brand SD cards of late. they're all still going, and they all speed test at the listed 4-10 download speed they're sold as. you should be fine
  • Tesco have a Twin Pack of Sandisk 8GB SDHC Class 4 for £6. Product Code is 280-5947. The picture shows the cards as micro, but they are STANDARD size cards. (Left review showing this and contacted Tesco).

A very cheap price, with the back up of a known company, unlike Ebay.

Having bought a memory card that claimed was "upgraded" to 32GB Class 10, I tested it before using with f3 (similar to H2testW, but runs on Linux) and found it performed as a 4GB Class 2 card. It even had data loss at around 2GB. I put in for a refund from eBay. Seeing that a lot of buyers had experienced this but eBay had not seen to the problem of allowing sellers to sell these cards which they know to be sub-standard, I made this petition which we'll use to show eBay the extent of the issue. Please sign if you agree!

Since this topic features in the newsletter this week, just a quick reminder:

Got things on your computer/phone you care about?
    Back them up.
    Twice.
Yes, twice is the least you can do.

    Couple of technical points:

Most people just use USB drives to copy things, or to store data for a short time. Myself, I never had a single data corruption issue with either. That doesn't prove the following, obvious statement wrong:

both USB drives and SD&co cards are not suitable for long term storage (= more than a couple of years).
Heck - they've only been around for a dozen years! That makes them young, untested technology.
(It might surprise you, but proper data centres often use tape for some backups. It works. It's proven.).

As for balancing cost/speed/quality in your buying process, I am sure you'll find help further down in this thread.

Another reason to avoid cheap USB drives from the Ebays and East: as of 2014 anything USB-related is less than trusted . In theory, your USB drive is well designed to introduce spy&snoop&malware to your computer: http://www.wired.com/2014/07/usb-security/ Oh, and there's nothing you can do about it, by the way...
This may concern your IT admin more than yourself, but just to let you know...

And if you're really serious about your data - here's a good golden backup rules run-down: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheComputerBackupRuleOfThree.aspx :coffee:

As a rough guide, aim to pay 50p per GB
I think you are a bit out of date on pricing. I bought a 32GB Sandisk Ultra microsdhc uhs-1 and adapter from a UK seller on eBay for £7.49 last week. There were some cheaper but I had a short receipt window and picked a seller with high feedback and first class post.
  • I've got a couple of Verbatim, NANO USB OTG drives.

They're brilliant for extending the storage on my Hudl 2, and for transferring stuff between it and my PC.
