Calling The UK From Abroad

Hi,
Im going to be working in some different countries around the world such as the Middle East, Asia and Australia and Im trying to figure out the best and cheapest way to call home, as well as that I wont have regular internet access.
So far I have checked ekit mobile and their international sim is perfect for receiving calls so now I have to figure out how to call the UK cheaply.
Im considering using skype to call landlines and mobiles but Im wondering can anybody else recommend any cheaper VOIP services or other Skype alternatives.
