you dont need to put in any info for a keylogger to be dropped into your system

run a spyware scan if you have a program...just to make sure

Use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer to avoid keyloggers and suchlike.
It won't avoid keyloggers and suchlike - sorry. Infact it can leave you more exposed because the large AV companies concentrate on keeping their AV up to date working with IE that they are either not compatible with the smaller browsers or are a version or two behind on what they are compatible on. That means any security issues are not likely to be dealt with quickly and the program updated to protect - why should they waste the money when they clearly state it isn't compatible...
If you do have a problem and call for help they'll tell you to use IE and "bad luck" if you used a non-supported browser...
Best advice is to have an up to date AV software and make sure you think twice before you open Paypal etc mails :) If you use hotmail then any files are scanned if you open them through the online login and most AV software worth their salt will now be able to detect phishing sites although they might not catch them all..

It's a well known fact that IE is far more susceptible to hack attempts than Firefox is.

Nope it's a well known fact that more people use IE therefor more people attack IE because they are more likely to get a bigger rate of infection whether it be for the purpose of hacking, phishing or just causing grief and gaining "fame". Firefox has just as many holes if not more, it's just not in possession of enough of the market for malware writers to spend the time in writing their malware to attack it...
