Some bike shops, Evans is one, do bike maintenance lessons that cost about £15.

Ask in the bike shop whether they run classes or do a search on the web.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

It sounds like the bike is much more than you need and therefore too complex.
Google for your local cycling club, contact them and ask for advice about exchanging it for another one and/or getting it serviced.

Come on, you know £99 isn't bad to service a 5 grand bike.
LOL ... do they exist? Blimey.

After 42 miles ambling along its unlikely it needs a service. Adjusting the front derailleur will stop the chain falling off. Are there any keen cyclists or cycle clubs near you. Most are keen to help.
I took it into the shop where I bought it Half**** .... and he whipped his spanner out, did stuff.... then said I must be riding it too slowly. I said "well, you have to start slow.... and ride a lot .... to get faster" I deemed him to be an iriot and never returned.

No idea re cyclists/clubs, just moved to a new area (200 miles from previous one).

Probably is ... cost me a fortune. Can't even reach the ground (have to stop beside kerbs).

I fell for the marketing spiel http://www.malleys.co.uk/bike/thebikes/bikes2003/p4000ladies.htm

Don't want to exchange it really ... it's some super-light aluminium alloy .... so I can pick it up and still walk up 100 steps (which I have to do quite often when out and about).

I googled them, there's a shop in my town, but the courses are not in my town. http://www.evanscycles.com/categories/tools-maintenance/fixit-classes I have no idea how far away those places are .... I'll chuck a few into Google. Bristol's 80 miles away, so that'd be doable next year, combined with any other trip I make in the same direction. That might be the nearest.

I think I paid £30 or £35 for my service earlier this year. They changed one of the brake blocks, and wrecked my gears. Bargain.

I think I spent about £150 on my last bike service. New gears, new cables, it all adds up.

If you want low maintenance look at a simple bike with a 3-speed hub (enclosed). Then you just need to oil it occasionally.

I think that's what the op had.

No, it's got 7 on the right bar (that's easy) .... and on the left a multi-clicking H-L thing .... that's the start of my troubles every time.

I can always cycle in 5-6-7, it's when I start moving the left hand part that it all goes boobs up.
