But where....? I don't have any space. Not even space to keep my bike.

well a bike stand makes things easier (its about the size of a golfing brolley folded up), but if you want to go old-school, then just turn it upside down so its resting on the saddle and handlebars

can you really not keep the bike locked up, outside where you live?

Servicing a bike nowadays is easy. In my day you had to have the right tools to take the bottom bracket apart (remove cranks, then cups, then ball races), thoroughly clean everything or renew, do the same to the headset, pedal and wheel bearings, then start on the brake and gearcables, cleaning out the freewheel (or replacing it and the chain).
Blimey I am feeling tired just thinking about it!

No, no outside space is mine. And there's nothing out there to lock it up to. And it'd get manky as there are lots and lots of bushes/trees constantly shedding stuff.

I know... I googled some price lists and many state that price is a minor service; a major one's about £100!!!!

    Outrageous!

Must be for all those overpaid lycra-wearing types.

    :)

My mechanic's top service is £99 but he does renew everything for that and promises it'll ride as new if not better..

For £99 I'd want him to ride it FOR me!

Come on, you know £99 isn't bad to service a 5 grand bike.

...Not that I've ever availed of said service.
  • Probably 6 years, but most of those it's been in storage as every time I went out it got a puncture or the chain fell off.

Probably cycled once for 30 miles one day ... and about six journeys of 2 miles each.

My riding style is: "middle-aged woman ambles along, looking at the view."
After 42 miles ambling along its unlikely it needs a service. Adjusting the front derailleur will stop the chain falling off. Are there any keen cyclists or cycle clubs near you. Most are keen to help.
