  • Pet Plan have quoted: £18 per month. However, will question whether the renewal will dramatically go up next year.

I imagine a puppy may be more expensive to insure at a very young age due to the nature of getting into everything and eating everything - operations of injuries for having climbed and fallen, or obstructions for having eaten the TV remote may be a bit more common in that age-range and thus pushing the premiums up.
I imagine the Bromley area may be partly responsible too - I live in Surrey and when seeing how much cheaper I could get insurance when we were considering moving further up North (Mansfield area), it was half the price of what I'm paying now. I know from threads on dog forums in the past that some of the fees vets charge in Surrey can be twice that of those elsewhere in the country so can see why the insurance companies charge more too.

    a MONTH?????????????

for a puppy??????

it was very expensive for me too !

I am in the ML1 area of Scotland, which is in North Lanarkshire, not sure if there is something going on.... hear reports of travellers dog napping and things from time to time but thought it could all be rumours. Maybe this has caused it to hike up in my area??

Going to try a few just now and will post the quotes. Will try John Lewis, Axa and Argos.

Tesco is £25.87 pcm which offers £7,500 per condition.... but I am not sure if its yearly per condition or for lifetime of the dog ? If the latter not that much then

I'd go for AXA then (and have done twice myself). All companies can and will increase premiums, but usually it's worth starting low.

£7k is more than enough to do a hip replacement, so it should be fine for most things. In case it looks like I'm from the AXA marketing board, you might want to read this thread and see if it changes your opinion (RSA underwrite both JL & Tesco, and it didn't change mine):

EDIT: Just looked at Tesco. Avoid:
"You will not be able to claim on the policy for the same condition once the maximum limit is reached." I.e. not lifetime as most understand it.

Okay defo not going with Tesco, even a small health problem at say 3 years old, 7k will be used up pretty soon.

Axa looks okay, will chat with vet on Thursday and see if they take direct claims from them as they do some.
  • It depends on the vet if they take direct claims or not - my one does direct claim if a bill is over £300 and only from few companies that they have experience of dealing with.
  • Blummin' nora...I thought mine was dear at £15-odd per month for a 5 year old nutty springer spaniel! With previous claims! Good lord...Mine's More Than, £70 excess + a small percentage of the total claim (I think it's 10% but may only be 5, I can't remember off the top of my head). My vet deals direct, and I have had no problems - much easier than when we were with Tesco, who were verrrrry slow to pay out
Is that a light I see at the end of the tunnel?;)

Mine do direct claims with Axa. They prefer to have a pre-authorisation form but Axa don't do these for claims under £250/300 (can't remember which it was) so I had to give Axa authorisation for my vets to phone and discuss them, so my vets could check there were no exclusions and that the treatment was likely to be covered. They then just continue to submit repeat claims. The only issue I had is my vet automatically send out statements and chasing letters so I felt a bit hounded when Axa dragged their heels but it was all sorted eventually and the second claim was processed a lot quicker.
