Calling from UK to Spain

Hi there,

My cousin lives in Spain and his mam has just ended up with a larger than she expected mobile phone bill from talking to him on her T Mobile phone from the UK.

None of us are whizzes at mobile technology and pricing etc and I was hoping I may be able to get some advice from anyone on this site.

What is the cheapest way for her to be able to make mobile calls to him without getting a bill for almost £40 each month (on those calls alone)? Iv heard of that thing called Skype but Iv no idea what it is or how it works. Is there any other way?

I thank you millions in advance for any help you can offer.

Skype is good for making calls from a PC (preferably to a PC) or from a smartphone connected to WiFi.
  • Hi there and thanks for the reply. Can you explain what Skype is? Do you have to do this through the PC as she doesnt use one.

An easy option (although possibly not the cheapest) would be to purchase an O2 International Calling Card.

The card costs £10 and calls to Spain are 1p/min to landlines and 6p / min to mobiles. There are no connection charges but you will use up your free t-mobile minutes when dialling the access number 0203 505 5555.

If you don't have any free minutes then this option isn't worth considering.

O2 International Favourites is another good option, especially for calling to Spain landline number.
£10 last for a month and give 3000(!) minutes and a local number in Spain for them to call cheap/free to UK.

Re Skype, just google for, say, 'skype explained'. Yes, she needs a PC (or a smartphone) and internet connection.
  • her son in spain doesnt have a landline ... he only has a mobile. I think this is why it is costing so much. Thank you very much to you both for your advice.
  • Using dialacode you can call a spanish mobile for 8p a minute from a t mobile phone. I think the normal cost is around 70p a minute.http://www.dialacode.com/cheap-international-calls-to-Spain

    :rotfl:

You mean that the call charge comes from his 'inclusive minutes'

His free minutes he gets do come off his allowence but he does not get charged any extra. We get charged for recieving the call think it was 15p a minute when we went in April but as far as I know O2 have changed it so when we recieve a call it costs us 50p and the rest will come off our free minutes.

What does this have to do with the topic of this thread?
The OP's cousin lives in Spain and uses a local sim. Are you suggesting him to get a UK sim and to pay roaming charges for calls from UK?
