Sold item collection only but buyer demanding courier as not local - what to do?

I sold an item ending today (large, heavy and bulky), which I stated collection only as I have no packaging for it and no idea what it weighs.

The person that has won the item is not local and is asking me to send it by courier. They have told me to wrap it in bubble wrap and bin liners. This is no good for me as I am not spending £5 (needs about 5 rolls of bubble wrap) on bubble wrap out of my own pocket and due to work I cannot possible wait in all day for a courier. The item only sold for £5 so it's not really worth the hassle.

What shall I do?

Tell them politely that it is collection only. If they dont agree to collect then ask for a mutual cancellation. Or you could ask for them to send extra funds to cover the bubble wrap and your time etc??
  • They won't be able to collect as they live about 500 miles away from me! Can they give me negative feedback?

  • This happened to me about 3 years ago. I sold my old snowboard on eBay and the listing clearly stated collection only. Winning bidder lived 400 miles away.

Il skip over the next couple weeks and numerous messages through EBay. In the end I agreed to make the item available for collection by courier, at the buyers expense. Throughout the process I kept in touch with eBay and received reassurances that any negative feedback could be removed. Fortunately, no feedback was left by the buyer and I left none. Probably the best result in the end, I just wanted this awful buyer out of my life. I blocked them form bidding on other items too.

I've never listed anything as collection only since, if it's too big/heavy to post I use the local free ads. Occasionally I get people bidding on my stuff who are local and get messages asking if they can collect. I say yes but 9/10 times they pay and just say post it.

I would reiterate that the item was sold 'collection only' and if they can't collect, make a second chance offer to your next bidder.

Should you get bad feedback from the original buyer, make a calm reply on the feedback forum saying that it was collection only and the buyer was at fault.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

Tell them (poiltely) to do one.

  • Ive got one, listed collection only and buyer won the item for £1, was going to contact today as they have not messaged me to arrange collection and found they live over 200 miles away.
Not sure what to do now, the item was going in the bin if it didn't sell but theres no way it can be posted even if they paid for it.

Just had a similar one, collection only cash on collection proffered. Buyer has paid via PayPal and asking for address to arrange collection.
What is my best course of action?

You can't refuse paypal so you'll need to just arrange collection now. :)
