Can I convert gas fire to open fire?

Hello
I have a lovely old iron (I guess - heavy black metal) fireplace in the front room that used to have a gas fire in, but the gas was disconnected a while ago. We have a chimney still - how can I tell if I can use this as an open fire and whom can help?
I assume I'll need a sweep to come for the chimney -w ould they be able to tell if I could use the fireplace as is?
Sorry if qs seem dumb - but I've never had a real fireplace before!
Thanks

Find out if you are in a smokeless fuel area first. A local chimney sweep will know, then get the chimney checked, is it lined ?0

I have no idea about it being lined - it's a closed type fire so not sure how I'd tell? Think I'm smokeless fuel area as greater London (Croydon). My friend has a real fire - I'll ask for her sweeps details and see if they can come out to see me
Thanks
Rebecca

Make sure the constructional hearth is still in front of the fire too. Our bedroom fireplace is still there but the hearth has been removed rendering the fireplace unsafe to use in its present state.0
