Many thanks TQ. I'm not sure if he gets AA ( he doesn't get DLA ) He doesn't know if he gets AA, but I have looked at his bank statement, and one amount ( weekly ) is down as PC ( Pension Credit presumably)..£70.81, and, SP ( State Pension ) weekly..£175.83 ( which seems alot to me ? ).

How would I find out if he does get Attendance Allowance, and , if he does, would he still get Carers Allowance. Like I said, he has £40,000 in income bonds and £4,000 current savings account.

Is it worth a try ?

    Thanks !

It doesn't look like he gets AA as it would be clear on his statement. It isn't means tested so as long as he is eligible he would get it. Its given for care needs only as opposed to DLA which has a mobility element. He wouldn't get carer's allowance but the person caring for him would. They need to look after him for a minimum of 35 hours per week and earn less than £105.

By the way £4000 in a current account isn't a smll amount.:)

Attendance Allowance isn't means tested so he could have a million and still claim it.

If he gets AA, someone can claim CA if they help him for 35 hours a week and don't earn too much elsewhere. His income and capital aren't taken into account.
  • Thankyou both, If the allowance was paid then, it would be paid to either myself or my husband ( his son ) - but we dont spend 35 hours looking after him per week.

I have a company pension of 98 per week, and a state pension of £101 per week, too. Husband doesn't have any income at all, but £75 per week on a rented out property we own.

We have premium bonds of £20,000, and a maturing ISA next year, about £9,000, and around £7,000 savings.
  • If you don't spend 35 hours a week looking after him then it seems pointless to look further into this doesn't it?

From what you say neither of you would be entitled to carer's allowance. Neither of you care for enough hours and you have too much income. Firstly though you need to apply for AA for him which would certainly help to pay for the help he needs.

  • OK, then, thankyou TQ for being really helpful. I will look into this Attendance Allowance.( I wonder why the assessor didn't ask me if he got that then ? )

( princessdon.. thanks.. as you say, no point in claiming CA then because although we do look after him alot, it would not be 5 hours per day - can't understand the 35 hours per week stipulation though ? ) Someone in authority must have a reason for it.
  • op- it might help you understand the answers you've had if I can explain how AA and CA work.

CA is a benefit paid to people who can't work for any/many hours because they are looking after someone who needs their help because of disability for at least 35 hours a week. It's intended to provide an income to 'replace earnings' (to a minimal extent) so if the carer manages to earn more than £100 pw as well as caring they are deemed not to need CA.

AA is paid to the disabled person to help meet the additional costs they have day to day. It doesn't have to be spent on paying for care but some people use it for this if they chose to/need to.
  • Thankyou. I now see the reason for the 35 hours stipulation. I will definitely apply for him for the AA though. It seems as if any savings will not be taken into consideration. I never knew about this allowance as I never thought that he was in need of money, as he seems to have enough, but if it's available to him, he can help pay the cleaner and the man who does the gardening, and maybe not be as frugal as he is, if there is a little extra to be had

This site is great for finding out what we need to know. So many people are so helpful, and I thank you all.

By all means claim it if he's entitled to it but if he has 40k he doesn't need to be frugal, does he?
  • No, he certainly doesn't need to be, but he IS ! He had a poor childhood ( poor, as in moneywise ) and he has always been ' careful' Perhaps that's why he has 40k now !

I have just made a AA claim online for him.
