Football Spam CCRRAAPPstorm on housing forum

Options
Very disappointed that this still stands on that forum 3 hours after it started. Multiple posters too with hundreds of posts. It happened a lot last year and now the football season has started it is back again I suggest using the swear filter to make the spammed domain name slightly wrong as a first move - plus being much quicker off the mark to cull spam - possibley putting new users on a very short fuse for deletion with the spam button and auto PPRing such users on a short fuse too

They will be back, they will work around counter measures apart from admins dealing with abuse reports in real time. Please get to it - else this will kill the housing forum

  • Hi there,

Please press the spam_small.gif button on every spam post you see. It helps us get rid of the posts and identify the users responsible. Thank you.

That's all well and good saying that but it only took 2 of these spambots to rack up 11 pages of posts on the housing board last week and to be honest, I got fed up opening up post after post then scrolling down to the bottom of each post to click the spam button.
It only takes a couple of them to do all the spam posts but it takes a large number of dedicated regular forum users to make the effort to report all of the posts before MSE towers will notice that anything is happening.
  • As torbrex pointed at, it takes a certain number of users (which I don't think MSE Towers has disclosed, not to my knowledge anyway) clicking the spam button in order to remove the message from the thread for further investigation.

If this is quite a high number, then it just seems like it takes forever for spammers to be dealt with, and it's a pity we can't track these morons down and blast them to dust with an orbital death ray - would be cheaper than prosecuting them.

At about the same time as the housing board was being hit last week by the 2 spambots, the credit card board was also being hit by a spammer posting about American Football games being shown online. When I saw it, there were only 5 views listed and one member had posted that it was spam but when I clicked the spam button and returned to the main menu, I noticed that the thread had been removed along with another 2 by the same poster.

It was obvious to me that the credit card board had more 'protection' at that time from spammers, whether it was because the BG has more power and influence I don't know but the removal was almost instant.

The chasing of the spam button also reminded me of how damned annoying the back button is on this site, I still have the 'top of the Page' problem that I highlighted on this board some time ago.
