Anyone ever had problems porting a PAYG number ?

Hi,

My Brother-in-law (BIL) has asked me to advise on reducing his mob.phone charges.
His vodafone contract is about to end, and he was thinking of going to PAYG, he NEEDS to keep his number.
The vodafone rep on CS told him there was no problem taking his number to PAYG (not necessarily voda PAYG), but that it would be difficult or impossible to swap it back if he wants a contract later on.

I think this is just Vodafone tying to scare him into staying with them on a new contract, but is your experience any different?
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

That's complete rubbish. You can port a number to and from any kind of acc (and back again), with out any problems.
But you can't use it within the same network, you have to port out and in again (apart from O2, where you can!)...

What you say sounds confusing. You can switch from a contract to PAYG on the same network, then back (subject to a credit check) and you don't need to port your number in this case.
Only if you buy a new contract with the same provider with a new number (usually from a third party) you may need to transfer your old PAYG number to the new contract. Vodafone do this too, not only O2. Orange do this too reportedly. If it is other network, porting out and back may be the only option indeed.

I agree that what Vodafone rep told the OP was rubbish.
