Do I really need a landline to get broadband?

Basically I want to get broadband but I never plan to use my landline. I phoned o2 and they're telling me I need a landline and that will double the price. Is there a way to get broadband without a landline? And if not are there any landline providers that dont charge monthly and just charge per call as I'll never use it?

Virgin media do cable broadband via fibre-to-the-cabinet then a coaxial cable that comes into the house. You can get this without a phoneline.
Most if not all others are ADSL broadband which require a phoneline.
Edit - for many, mobile broadband is also a feasible solution.0 -

How do you expect the local network to be maintained for your broadband signal if you only want to pay for your landline when making calls? It wouldn't be a very viable business model.
If you want ADSL broadband then you need an active landline-and that requires you to pay line rental.
VM cable or a wireless dongle are the only viable alternatives. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
