Help - Planning permission on next doors property

First time on this board, and looking for advice.

My elderly neighbour was put into an elderly peoples home back in September by her neice and sold the property in October.

We have not met the new owner, and since found out he has purchased it as an investment.

On Friday we received a letter from the council planning dept that the new owner has put forward plans to change the house into 2 self contained flats.

The house itself is of a good size for a family, 3 bed front garden and approx 100 ft rear garden with garage and hardstanding.

He has plans to change this into 2 flats.

Top being a 2 bedroom flat and bottom 1 bedroom

We all the neighbours are horrified at the plans we want to view or objections against the plans.

Do we have any chance of the plans being refused.

Please help / advise

you have to object on planning issues rather than just not liking it.

think overcrowding of street, parking problems, obtrusion into the road, overlooking your garden.

    Why are you horrified ??
Many large houses are being split into flats, as property prices are so high.

House prices, the economy, government incompetence have created this.

  • Yes we have started to make a list of the obvious things like parking and noise, de-valuing our properties, etc....

excuse me being dense what do you mean by obtrusion into the road?

Our other argument is that, my style of house in my road does not come onto the market very much when they do they are snapped up by families with young children often well within a week, as did my neigbours house 6 days! last October and more recently a property in 5 days with the purchaser paying an extra £2K on the asking price in order to secure it (new buyers have 2 small children)

What I mean to say is that although first time buyer properties are in great demand so are family starter houses.

Like I have just mentioned the style and size of the properties within my street are highly sought after family homes and never have problems in selling, so these are also in great demand most of us in the street having young families and the school nearby is a very good one.

We are all shocked that someone who lives 20 miles away from the property has purchased it to make into flats.

We are also thinking it may de-value our properties in the process too.

No objection when renovating, works need to be done couple who lived there were in their 90's so needs alot of work new kitchen, bathroom, electrics etc

I have 2 small children and the other side of the property they have 3 (terraced houses).

We are thinking that making 2 s/c properties will make more noise as both floors are going to be occupied and will be active especially evening, having children who sleep upstairs their bedroom walls will be against the proposed, sitting/kitchen dining room.

These are more of a concern really.

Maybe we just have overacted to the news

afaik you can't object to planning on the basis of a development devaluing your property.

...I heard that people who live in flats have horrible boils all over their skin and smell of grasshoppers...

Are they actually planning on extending the building any, or just splitting the house into 2?

No other house in the street has been converted, so we don't really want it start now to be honest, so perhaps we do have a sense of NIMBY it's not just me all of us feel the same
