Question: who here's been flashed? (Minds out the gutter, I mean by a Speed Camera)

Very quick query (I hope). I did a forum and a google search and couldn't really find anything so forgive me to asking a dumb question.

I got flashed by a speed camera the other week. Annoyingly I am always really careful about my speed (except that time I hired a DB9 and, come on! :p ) but was doing about 35mph in a 30 limit. No excuse, knew the camera was there, just momentary loss of concentration and my speed crept up. Could kick myself really but at least it's refocused me.
My late DH was very anti speed cameras and we had countless debates about them, usually culminating in me, somewhat sanctamoniously getting the last word in edgewise saying something like "well if you don't speed, you've got nothing to worry about." yes, quite. Oh I bet he's up there laughing his pants off at me right now. :o

Anyway, I am aware a flash does not necessarily mean anything but obviously I'm going to worry until I know for sure. Can anyone tell me how quickly I might expect to get a letter if I am going to? I really just want to know when I can stop cowering from the postman again? ;)

Thanks in advance. :)

  • Huh, I was in the Motoring section a moment ago... Hmm, I will ask for this to be moved... sorry!

  • Fingers crossed for you. Apparently it doesn't always manage to record it. I was flashed jumping a red light once (again momentary slip of the mind as I was watching the idiot in the lane next to me almost steering into me rather than the lights in front of me) and I did get a fine and points for that.

I'm pretty certain they have to notify you within 28 days. My parents had a letter once warning them that they had been caught doing 33pmh in a 30mph zone but no further action was taken.

Depends on the speed I believe, if it's 36-49mph you'll get a ticket, over 49 and you'll get a court summons. Under 35mph and you'll get a warning.. I believe. (not a police officer so don't quote me on that)

as to cameras, it's pot luck whether they have any film in them or not. I've been through one that flashed but never heard anything about it. On the other hand I have had a police officer jump out from behind a bunch of parked cars and shove a camera at me and I got pulled over and was fined for doing 37mph...

A Notice of Intended Prosecution (a NIP) has to be sent to the registered keeper within 14 days.

There's a notorious speed camera near us, on a rural A road, near a school where the limit is 30MPH.
I actually think the limit should be 20 at school start / end times, then traffic allowed to pass by these few scattered dwellings around 50 at other times.
Am probably biassed as got flashed doing 35 at 10:33pm on an empty road. This resulted in a £60 fine & 3 points, or attendance at a speed awareness course :( (Only an option if you haven't been flashed in last few months and within certain limits.) Arrived within a couple of weeks.
People told us to appeal as there's an allowance, so I rang our local traffic division. The official line is, "The limit is the limit." None of this 10% + 2pmh- that's an urban myth!

I don't drive; however, a member of my family was sent on a driving management course (or whatever) in Dorset two years ago for speeding through a notorious local blackspot.

  • Thanks all. Umm, not sure why this is still here and not moved yet? I am having a flippy headed day though so probably didn't report myself properly either. Doh!

Is this the actual law then? or is is 28 days as someone else says?
Good to know there's a time limit anyway. I assume if anythign arrives after the time limit it then I can appeal as it's not timely. Incident was 30th August (I have been worrying ever since but had bigger fish to fry with weddings and school starts and birthdays). If it's 2 weeks, and I hear nothing by this Thursday I can safely assume either a: it wasn't me that got flashed or b: there was no film in the camera. Either way, good to know I don't have to worry for long.

    Thank you all. :)

No you still have to leep worrying. The 14 days is for the registered keeper.

They get x amount of time to respond then they write to you.

    Long wait ahead.

Thanks for the half empty glass. :rotfl:

Which brings me back to my original question. How long have others had to wait to get the letter?

Sheesh is this still here? I will report again to get it moved. :o
