John Lewis Pet Insurance

Got a letter from John Lewis stating they can insure my pet from £5 a month, no upper age limit.

As I've just had a renewal quote from Direct Line for £38 a month for my 9 year old dog, I got an online quote...£86 a month:eek:!

AND I'd have to pay 20% of the cost of her treatment as well as a bigger excess!

I don't think so!

No chance whatsoever!!

Without wishing to put a downer on things, I would check the policy wording VERY closely before you sign up. Things which seem too good to be true usually are in my experience.

For a dog the age of yours, I would not expect a policy to give the sort of cover you may need for that price. People have been caught out so many times buying cheap pet insurance.

    Note the key word there.
Have you actually got a quote from JL yet?

I think zaksmum was saying that the JL online quote was £86 a month.

I guess one thing with the renewal is that a: direct line have already made a lot of money off you. B: they're in a better position to give a price because they have your claim history with them to hand, whereas JL or whoever runs their insurance is just taking it on goodwill that you've got a 9 year old dog that isnt going to keep over and need tens of thousands of pounds of cancer treatment the day after you open your insurance. it's a riskier proposition.

My parents found with their insurance they had that as good as the price was, you could only claim once per ailment, which soon came to bite them when he got a back injury and needed a couple of operations and a persistent ear infection. So they went with a more expensive company later that did give a bit more freedom. Insurance is a horrible thing to get right sometimes.

    Yes, read the post properly

I did. It can be construed more than one way if YOU read it properly.

Does she say the online quote came from John Lewis? Erm no.
So is it reasonable to also assume that perhaps the renewal quote from Direct Line came via the post and she went online to run another quote.

Sometimes posts aren't 100% clear and can be read a couple of ways. Instead of being arsey you may do well to bear that in mind.

FWIW Zaksmum, I run a quote on my 12 year old dog through JL and it came out at £35 a month for the basic cover, which for a dog of his age is a reasonable quote and cheaper than most I've had. There are 3 levels of cover with JL and that was the basic with £80 excess so your £86 a month seems very expensive unless its the top level.

Arsey people are capable of absorbing only one idea at a time.

That is uncalled for. I have read the post properly as well and it says FROM, that is not a definite quote if it says from!

    Oooh, no fighting now!

Yes, the John Lewis quote was the top policy, and so it should be for £86 a month!

I went on to obtain a quote from Marks and Spencer for just £23 a month, again with having to pay 20% of the cost of vet fees and a £70 excess, but 7K of treatment cost a year and overall a pretty good policy, so we've gone with that now.
  • My dog is insured with Tesco, for 11 pound a month although I initially put his age in wrong and when I rang up to change it they said that when I renew next year it will go up (he's almost 9 and I first put him it at 6, don't know how that happened!), so we'll see. I only have to pay 60 pound excess, no % of the the fee, which works better for me.
