How on earth do i use a coal fueled aga!

Can anyone give me some advice on how to use and run a coal fueled aga.
In 2 weeks i move to a new house with a 1940s aga. It wasnt used much by the last occupants and not at all in the last 6 months.
I dont even know what coal to use as they have left no suppliers contacts!

It looks in good clean condition and was apparently professionally cleaned and swept 12 months ago. It doesnt heat the water or radiators its just a stand alone appliance.
They have left me the hook to remove the cover where the coal goes and a large scuttle that is apparently enough to last all day.

Please help!:embarasse

  • Is this some sort of trick thread?

You basically make a fire in it, then put coal on top, then shut the door.

For coal you get a copy of the yellow pages, look under 'C', then ring the one you like the look of.
  • This is not a trick thread and from what iv been told coal fired agas are hard to maintain and need specific fuel!

This is the first time i have used this forum and have asked a genuine question after being recommended this site by a friend. I wish i hadnt bothered after that reply! Absolutely no need for such a rude response to someone wanting help!!

If I were you I would get it converted to oil, gas or even electricity as soon as possible. A solid fuel Aga needs constant attention if you want to maintain an even cooking heat. They work best if there is someone at home all day to keep them stoked up.

I'd recommend that you join this forum and ask on there....

  • We used to have a rayburn when I was little ( a smaller version of an aga ). It kept the kitchen lovely and warm in the winter, and indeed the rest of the house really as it was small two up two down house.

Anyway, I've found this thread, perhaps you will find it interesting.

You might get more help if you repost to the Old Style board.

They are Aga experts over there and tend to be very helpful :)
