Car insurance - Business Use?

Hi

I am renewing my car insurance policy and a prospective new employer is specifiying I must have business use because I will be driving between sites as a support worker. I am looking at a good quote from Aviva but am not sure what I need to put down for business use as it is not MY business, but my employer's.

The options are:

Personal Business Use

This includes personal business use of the main driver and their domestic partner only (additional drivers are only covered for social, domestic and pleasure plus commuting). If the vehicle is used for any kind of deliveries please call us.

Employer's Business Use
This cover extends business use to additional drivers as long as it is related to the business of:
  • The main driver or their domestic partner.
  • The main driver’s employer or business partner.
It does not allow additional drivers to use the vehicle for their own business use.

There's little in the price so should I go for the extended one, or is that designed for additional drivers, of which there are none requiring business use cover?

Thanks!

    Excellent, thanks for your help.
  • Has your employer been more specific in what they require? Generally an employer (my last one did) requires Business Insurance that specifically indemnifies the employer against any 3rd Party claims. Therefore Personal Business Use was not acceptable to my previous employer. I found that generally Class 1 Business Use included this but I had to get one insurer to write and confirm this before I could get my expenses paid.

Yeah, you'll need business use on there, but it doesn't normally add a lot, when I first added mine years ago it was about £20, what racked it up was the additional miles. That said, some insurers will take the !!!! in what they charge, just like anything else.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

I must be not understanding something but I thought any business cover will indemnify against third party claims, it's sort of the whole point of it.

Similarly, I also thought "personal business" was the same as "class one"

You are talking about indemnifying the insured. Some employers seek an indemnity to them also.

The job specifics just state this:

This is an essential car-user’s post. Proof of appropriate insurance cover, including business use, will be requested however we may consider you if you cannot drive because of a disability.

Care to expand on what circumstances might give rise to a third party claim against an employer that wouldn't be covered by the employee's ordinary business use insurance?

If there are any then it's maybe something I need to consider with the guys that work for me using their own cars (with class 1 cover)

Company give you a tin of paint to take to the site with you and that tin leaks.

Could they be responsible? And you need cover that covers things like this also?

leaks and drips out of the back of a van and damages the car behind would be covered by the drivers business use cover surely?

As above, I'd be interested in what circumstances would give rise to a third party claim against an employer that wouldn't be covered by the employee's ordinary business use insurance?
