Just a simple question - cheques

When I got married some people gave us cheques made out to Mr & Mrs xxxxx as wedding gifts. Natwest would not let me pay these into my account and we didn't have a joint account (and didn't want one either). I tried again with my Barclays account and they accepted them without hesitation.
I think sometimes they just make the rules up as they go along.0 -
OK. So now the answer!
Nationwide told me that I can pay single payee cheques into a joint account but not double payee cheques into a single account. So I didn't need hubbys card or details, just his cheque and my joint bank card.
Thanks for all the replies.0 -
Yeah, apologies for the mistake I made above. As both parties are solely and jointly liable for the account there should be no terms and conditions-related reasons to refuse a cheque made out in one account holder's name, paid into a joint account.
I have seen cheques return when payable to only one of the account holders, but I suppose this may be down to the signing rules on the account or (more likely) other reasons, including that we were wrong to return the cheque...0
