You dont have to take a new policy out with Swinton, i'd be looking for another insurer cheapest at the moment seems to be AVIVA, my renewal quote from them was cheaper than all the others put together.
When you phone them to FIX this problem, dont speak to the idiot who finally answer the phone, ask them to speak to someone higher up, their boss or manager someone who can sort this out quickly. Make sure to have their T&C in front of you.
Explain to the manager the reason why you cancelled the DD and say something in the lines that you know you where wrong to cancel them but where worried about the DD coming out and not having enough in the bank to cover it, before speaking to them as it can be a long wait on the phone, But you did contact them after you cancelled it. saying you should have asked for the DD date to be moved forward instead that month instead of cancelling.
And if they insist that you pay the remainder and take out a new policy you say OK I will, with another company, and you can cancel that policy I had completely and you will owe nothing, as technically the rest of the year you wont be with them. And state you will be contacting the insurance ombudsmen in regards.
I personally dont like paying monthly, which is why I try to save the montly so much per month and pay in 1 go, always cheaper, and less to think about.
Use currently insurance price + 30% / 12 or 52 if weekly. for any increases next year. doesnt always work as my insurance premium went up a 95%. example mine, 2010 paid £273 renewal quote in 2011 same car, same driver, no accidents, so should have gone down, £527 with swiftcover, switched to AVIVA for £460, this year renewal quote down.
