Cancelled direct debit - they cancelled my policy!!! HELP???!
Comments

See OP's post5#
She might well have been warned previously as to what would happen - cancelling a direct debit just 2 days before it is due to go out of the account is stupid in the extreme and I would suggest her going to the debt free wanabe board as she has a budgeting problem.0 -
I doubt they can cancel without going through the procedure in the t&c's which would include notifying you beforehand.
Not the same day........
I'm sure they can't do same day but they can cancel (in line with the T&C) at any time and for any reason leaving the poor old punter to try and find new cover within a week and with the black mark that is an insurer cancelled policy on their record.
It does seem bizarre that extreme bad driving like drunk driving or carnage involving trains & land rovers results in insurance loadings for 5 or 10 years whereas bouncing a direct debit with Swinton gets you a black mark that lasts forever0 -

what budgeting problem, she changed jobs and is now being paid weekly rather than monthly. as for swinton, I wouldnt touch them with a 100 ft barge poll after reading this.
note: banks usually charge for being overdrawn, and hence the reason she cancelled the direct debit, however leaving it to the next day to contact them was a mistake she should have done that BEFORE cancelling it. not that would have done any good as insurance companies dont listen to customers.0 -
Paid weekly means more flexibility surely not less as you get 4/5 paydays a month instead of one?
She had already indicated that this was not the first time it had happened.
When you take out an insurance policy and pay monthly - if you miss a payment many will insist on full payment to continue cover.
I still say she needs help with budgeting.0 -

.......
yep, but at the beginning of the month she would only have a weeks wages so having all DD coming out at the beginning of the month would be too much hence she needed to spread them which is why she cancelled the DD with the intention of moving it to week 3
If you get £2k a month then £500 rent, £200 insurance and £200 big food shop can all come out in the first week.
If you are getting £500 a week then you need to do rent one week, insurance the next week and the big food shop the week after
Still, as you say, a matter of budgeting but it was what she was trying to do0 -

Not a budgeting problem its purely a blip due to change in pay frequency. So if you havent got some useful advice please dont bother replying with your opinions!0 -
You've actually highlighted something very useful for others there. Not a budgeting problem its purely a blip due to change in pay frequency.
It's recommended that people try and assemble 3-6 months worth of income in a savings account to cover 'rainy days', redundancy, etc. Whilst I realise that may be an impossible task for some, especially in the short term, your experience serves to remind people it's a good idea to have at least one month's/a few weeks wages saved up.
Hope the above meets with your approval. So if you havent got some useful advice please dont bother replying with your opinions!
