Online fax service recommendations

Hi - can anyone recommend an online fax service? My Mother in Law was recently widowed and doesn't do email so we're looking to fax her in the short term. Any help greatly appreciated.

I may be wrong here, but I believe that in order to receive a fax you either need an actual fax machine or an email address (the fax is converted to email)
How do I add a signature?
  • We have e-mail and broadband but you can use online services to convert faxes to/from e-mail both ways. Looking for a recomendation of a good and preferably free or at least very cheap service.

You can convert email to fax (the recipient needs a physical or pseudo fax machine) or possibly convert fax to email (the recipient needs an email address). You didn't state that your Mother In Law has a fax machine, so I assumed not.

There used to be loads of email/fax gateways (efax, jfax for instance) but they are less and less common as faxes become extinct

You can find some free fax receiving services (fax sent to a number gets delivered as email) which use a non-free phone number

You cannot send faxes over VOIP lines (the quality of service is too low, the digital compression and delivery is incompatible with the analogue fax standard) so all fax-sending tools cost money. I did try one which advertised as free, but a whole third of the page was an advert which covered up useful bits of the message!

May be easiest and cheapest to get your own fax machine and send them from home!

soho66 fax to email for receivng biz faxes is good - have to have an account, has standard UK geographic number, can receive from abroad

for receiving personal faxes (as opposed biz ones) I use Faxtastic fax to email - sender must dial an 0871 number, receiving is free, cannot receive faxes from abroad

fax1 for sending form web page is OK, need to buy some credit
