Task this weekend was to investigate the cause of the overflow pipe dripping from the loft cold water header tank.

Removed top access panel. Saw the water level was indeed at the overflow mouth; now where is the ballcock and valve/pipework....ah, yes at the OTHER end of the tank....

Is that normal?! Why have the access panel at one end and all the gubbings at the other.
I'm no plumber so can't "feel" my way around, but can tell the ballcock isn't rising enough to cut off the valve. I have to really pull it up to stop the flow. Feels a lot of resistance; possibly years of hard water have caused it to seize.
Anyways how do I replace it as I can't get to it. I'm loathed to cut another hold in the tank as will compromise it's structure.
Going to call a plumber for this anyways, but interested in what they would do...

Thanks,
Vipes

because they stitch you up by installing them incorrectly in the first place!

What a crass comment. If it was installed that way it can be uninstalled that way. If its worked up until now it cannot possibly have been installed incorrectly.

It can be installed and done correctly again yes, but not by the Standard DIY person.
If it was put in right the first time, it could be more readily maintained. Hence the hindsight of including an access hatch for such a reason, sticking everything at the other end makes a small job a much larger one.
I've had it fixed by our local plumber, and even he said, the original job was just stuck together without any thought.

Had it occured to you that the "access panel" might possibly have been put in long after the original plumber had done his work. That still doesn't mean the original work was incorrect. I think you mean inconvenient for you but nevertheless incorrect can't possibly be the correct term to apply.
