Memory Foam Mattress

Hi everyone

I have just purchased a Healthbeds MemoryFlex mattress having done what seemed like hours and hours of research both on the internet and lying on mattresses in shops! I eventually decided on the above having read the Which? report where it came top in the memory foam category.

I took delivery on Thursday and have roasted every night since! This mattress has something called Coomax which is supposed to keep you cool all night ... unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working for me! My joints have also felt worse since sleeping on this mattress.

Anyways I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for keeping cool with this type of mattress? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated as I am just desparate for a decent nights sleep. _pale_

Many thanks

I can't comment on whys etc., but have you tried a thinner sheet as opposed to a duvet?

i have the same one and seem to be ok.

make sure your using good quality cotton sheets, they really make a difference and use a thinner duvet.

if you can contact the manufacterur and ask them, they shoudl have more experience.

I found my mattress topper kept me too hot until I swopped my duvet for a wool filled one from Dunelm (got a Kingshize one vastly reduced in cost due to a thread on this site!) Since then my night time temperature has been perfect (and I suffer from night sweats so it must be good!) ;)

Thanks everso much everyone for your replies and suggestions.

I've e-mailed the manufacturer but not had a reply yet, so think I'll try and give them a ring. I've switched my duvet from the winter to summer and I added an extra sheet last night and that did help a little with the heat, so perhaps I just need to give it a few more days and hope that my body adjusts.

Thanks again and here's hoping for a good night's sleep!

First of all, does the seller give a 100% satisfaction guarantee (this is very important when buying a type of mattress that you are not used to)??
If they do then send it back, it obviously doesn't suit you.

I've tried to find information on the mattress you purchased, but even the Healthbeds web site doesn't give much technical info. It says that they use memory foam supplied by vitafoam (I know they are an excellent manufacturer as I have first hand knowledge of them from the mattresses we sell).

It also doesn't say how deep the memory foam layer is, which can be very important when it comes to heat retention.

You also said that the mattress has a coolmax layer, well I can't find any mention of a coolmax layer on the Memoryflex mattress........who did you buy the mattress from??

There are a couple of reasons that some people say that memory foam makes you too hot:

    1) some manufacturers use very deep layers of memory foam, and tell people that the deeper the foam the better. The truth is that the optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Less than this and it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the foam is too deep, then you will sink into it, and it will wrap around you making you too hot.

2)mattresses with latex foam and memory foam don't allow air to circulate under the memory foam to remove the heat. This obviously isn't an issue with pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses. Memory foam does actually absorb heat from your body which then reacts with it to soften it. So as long as the heat can then disperse there is no problem.

Personally I find that I sweat less with my memory foam mattress than I did with my previous one.

    Hi Tim

Thanks very much for your post.

No unfortunately I don't think I did get a 100% satisfaction guarantee ... well certainly not the type of thing that Dreams offer. I did speak to the shop last week and they said give it a few more days as your body should adjust. They were also intimating that there would be nothing they could do if it didn't get any better. However, if needs be I shall be going down the road of 'it doesn't do what it says on the tin'!

I've now also spoken to the manufacturers who said that they hadn't had any other complaints with regard to this mattress and that the Coolmax cover should make the difference between theirs and other memory foam mattresses. As a lot of their customers had confirmed to them.

He also said to try using the mattress protector cover to see if that helps. I will give that a try too. At the moment I have just been using 2 sheets and that has helped, so perhaps the mattress protector will make all the difference. I hope so as my real concern is that it's not even summer yet!

    Thanks again Tim.

How long have you had the mattress, and who did you buy it from?

As far as comfort goes, what they say about giving it a little longer is true. Memory foam can take up to a month to break in properly.
  • Hi Tim

I found a Guarantee!! I went to rotate the mattress this morning and when I lifted one of the corners there sat this little guarantee card ... really odd, I guess it must have stuck to the mattress when I pulled the plastic cover off!! The card says to contact the shop where purchased if not satisfied, so will mention this to them if I feel the need to put in another call. The shop is called Hatters.

I've now had the mattress just over two weeks, tho it does seem longer! I think perhaps I am getting used to it a bit more so I shall persevere.

Thanks again for all your help.

Be careful that you don't go over the number of days allowed for the satisfaction guarantee.

We had to send ours back, not just the sweating thing, but the smell was terrible too...like a sort of damp, 'foosty' smell in the room. it was definitely the mattress.

We were roasting, even with a thin summer tog duvet. I woke with soaking hair from sweating! Yeuch. I was also very disappointed, as it was incredibly comfy...like sinking into a marshmallow.

The shop we bought it from changed it for a similar priced normal mattress without a question...made me wonder if they had lots of complaints.
