Appropriate PAYG Deal

Help please -I'm a bit out of my depth with mobiles. I plan to buy a new unlocked mobile which will mainly be for emergency purposes with very low usage. I will also want to use it for the occasional short call back to the UK when abroad on holiday.

As such I will not want to topup regularly but only when I need to which in my case is usually £10 about every 3 months or so.

Following previous advice here I have been using the basic TalkMobile PAYG tariff - very cheap and works fine from abroad, but uses the Vodaphone network which is a bit weak where I live. The checkers show Orange and O2 networks as very strong in my area. I only need 2G.

I don't need/want to be tied into a regular monthly topup. Any advice as to a suitable tariff gratefully received, please.

Thanks for reply but afraid that link is no longer active - error report when form submitted. Pity as it looked just what I wanted. Any other suggestions, please?

Yes, the proforma opens up but the error report shows after the details are completed and you press "submit".
  • Giffgaff is on o2.

Generally it is attractive for other reasons but it's OK as a PAYG operator using the o2 network.

Find a current user to introduce you and you both get a bonus on first top up.

Unfortunately, Tesco are trying to phase this out and you can’t order SIMs for the Lite tariff anymore. They might even tell you it’s no longer available. However, we’ve learned that by threatening to leave Tesco (ask to get your PAC code), they’ll happily switch you over rather than let you leave.
So, it is worth trying to get their regular PAYG sim first, then in a month requesting a PAC and asking to switch.

Also, Virgin Mobile have 'Simply 8p' tariff and use Orange/Tmobile network.
  • Its still on vodaphone but how about ovivo

I suspect the Virgin Simply 8p tariff would work for you. The signal can switch from T-Mobile to Orange without problems and you can top up from as little as £5.

Thanks for all the replies and info. Ovivo PAYG charges seem to be identical to Giffgaff but I have chosen Giffgaff as the O2 network is better for me. The Tesco lite suggestion is a nice one and it does have a cheaper tariff even than Giffgaff or Ovivo but my low usage doesn't justify the haggling.

A friend of mine changed from Normal Tesco Payg to To Tesco Lite last week. Easy Peasy no question,s asked.
