its already been asked and answered >1,500 times in the other thread!tomandjerry wrote: »I am glad that somebody asked such question.tomandjerry wrote: »I have got the papers at home from the company dealing with tax rebate on uniforms/professional fees etc...and suggested sum is much higher than some of you mentioned here. The company said I can claim 4 years back, but they also want admin fee of £15+20% of value of my rebate if all is successful. A friend used the same company and recomended it to me and others. She wanted to do it herself, but found it difficult to find all the receipts. So I am not sure what to do now. Could I claim even 6 years back? t&j
you would be very non MSE to use such a company and your "friend" has already been ripped off if they have done so and bad on them for recommending it to you
note that unless you are in one of the special categories you will only be entitled to receive £12 per year tax refund (ie you claim the default £60 and get back the tax you paid on that £60 ie 60 x 20% =£12
so paying £15 +20% is indeed a rip off for a company simply writing a letter
for anyone else stumbling across this thread its all been said over 1,500 times already in the main thread on uniforms here - read post #1 in that thread

and in fairly basic terms (misses out some bits) in the MSE guide

Note claiming the 4 years (plus the current tax year - ie 12/13 plus 4 years back to 08/09) is now on a rolling basis and there is a time limit by which you must have claimed

Sorry to thread-jack, i can post elsewhere if required, but...
The brother & sister posted off their letters to the tax orrifice a good number of weeks ago. They posted the letters at the same time.
My sister got her response & tax code raised late last week. My brother is still waiting on his.
Normal? Or should he have also had a response?0 -
I hope someone can help me, I have claimed the expenses for laundry for hubby (who is a postman) (yes he signed the letter) have just had recoding tax form back and though they have accepted the expense claims for laundry, they have just reduced his tax code by £60 a year - can someone please tell us why we are now worse off than before with a lower tax code than previous they have done this for this current tax year and the new tax year 2014/2015. So upset if I had of known we would be worse off i wouldn't have bothered HELP : (0

either HMRC or you have made a mistake....
tell us what his new tax code is and let us see if the mistake is what you think it is - no one will have a tax code for 14/15 yet so that cannot be right0 -
his tax code for 2013/14 was 956L and has been changed to 950L and for 14/15 they have changed code from 1012L to 1006L ??0

Royal Mail have a locally agreed allowance which I think is £120, HMRC don't make any of these allowances public but they are held on their employer record. At some point Royal Mail have engaged with HMRC to get these added to tax codes for their employees but not everyone has it (no-one gets these allowances automatically).
If you follow the instructions on the guide on here and ask for the £60 allowance HMRC may well just change the allowance to the lower amount, resulting in him being worse of. You should be able to call and ask them to re-instate the higher locally agreed allowance though.
One to watch our for for those just sending off this letter template though as you could end up out of pocket.0
