Hi,
I've written a letter to HMRC that goes like this:
"Dear Sir/Madam,
RE: Expenses Allowance
NI number:
D.O.B.
I was employed at Name, Address , from date until date. Staff numberand tax reference number. The last tax code I had was_____. I was employed as a job title. During that time I wasobliged to wear and launder the company name uniform, supplied to me by thecompany. As it was a company-branded uniform I could not wear itoutside of work. The company did not offer laundry services or anypayment/vouchers to cover laundry costs. I understand I can backdatemy claim four years. Whilst I did not pay income tax in the year2011/2012 I did in previous years. Therefore I would like to claimfor years 2008/2009, 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 if possible and if arebate is available to me I would like it payed by cheque as I amcurrently not employed (nor am I claiming any benefits). I enclose myP60s for the years above. I would be grateful if these could bereturned to me. "
Does that look ok and do you think I need to send off my P60s? I see some people have needed to but shouldn't they have all my info on file?Opinions gratefully received, thanks

On the question of P60s there's two ways to look at it.
1) you shouldn't need to send them as the employer should have already given HMRC a copy.
2) if HMRC doesn't have the info for any reason, it would help to avoid delays if you gave them copies. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I'm just starting to look into claiming for cleaning my work uniform but i'm not sure how i calculate how much to claim for. I see there are template letters available but it looks like i need to know how much i'm claiming for so i can fill it in correctly. Are there set amounts? If so is there a link to a list of them?
Thanks for any help you can offer!

I put in a claim for uniform tax rebate just over 3 weeks ago. I have today received a re-coding of my tax allowance to 8340 and have been told that a cheque had been issued for 190.00 being the rebate for previous years. Just for the cost of a stamp....not bad

All you need to do is write a letter to HMRC with details of your job title, who you work for, confirm that they do not launder your uniform or give you any allowances to do so. I wrote a letter to HMRC just over 3 weeks ago and have received a tax recoding for this year and a cheque for 190.00 being a rebate for previous years.0 -
That's brilliant, thanks! One more question though......Do i write to my local tax office or is there a 'head office' address that i should send it to?0
