Not turning engines off/revving engines

Ok, so I live in a peaceful, quiet(!) no through road, in the conservation area of my town, just off the town centre. Unfortunately there is a lot of parking available in the road, and we are plagued by people who seem unable to contemplate the thought of switching off there engines.

Worst by far are the motorbikers, who arrive in packs as soon as there is a glimmer of sunshine. They sit with their engines runing for 10-20 minutes at a time, blipping their throttle - LOUDLY again, and again, and again, and again! Why do they do this - is there a reason? or is it just to compensate for their really small appendages?

Next worst are the delivery drivers in diesel vans or lorrys who sit and park up for their lunch or to do their paperwork or make mobile phone calls (I can see them doing all of the above from my window). Again they leave their noisy, rattly, LOUD diesel engines running constantly, this time for anything up to 45 minutes...Why!!!!!!!!! Now I can understand if it is winter and they want to keep the heater running (although its still annoying!) And I could understand if they have a refrigerated loadspace that they need to keep the engine running for (though still annoying!) But what about all the rest? Why do they do it?

Iis so annoying, particularly in summer with the windows open and they shatter the peace and quiet. I feel like running out and shouting !!!!!! TURN YOUR BL00DY ENGINES OFF!

Rant over!

But seriously, if you are one of the ones who do this, can you explain why?????

  • Not that I can offer any help, but I'm really interested to know why there are essentially bike gangs gathering in your road. What about it exactly appeals to them?

lol, nothing sinister. I live in a small market town in the sticks, so often get the groups of weekend bikers coming out to drive round the country lanes. My road just happens to be off the town centre, near the river and has a lot of parking spaces, so they tend to congregate, as do the delivery drivers on their lunches, sales reps parking to make calls, etc etc etc.

Re lorry drivers, a lot of them, when the truck engine is turned off, lose all air pressure in the system, the only way to pressure back up is to turn the engine on and rev it for quite a while. So if they leave the engine running, the system stays good with pressure

Lose all the air pressure, really? I've driven some driven rubbish trucks in my time but even the worst would have to be parked up for a few hours to lose enough air to be a problem.

I just asked my hubby why he does this with his bike. The only answer he could give me is "because it sounds good". :o

I know exactly how you feel - but with us it's normally the neighbours boyfriend in his old junk car sat with his engine on for half hour while he waits for her to get ready. I wouldn't mind so much, but its normally around midnight when I'm trying to sleep!!

Private motorists/bikers you can get some compensation knowing that it is their fuel that they're wasting.

Lorry and commercial vehicle drivers - report them to their company as they're wasting company fuel.

If all else fails, approach your council.

In my street you can't hear the engines over the bluddy racket of the music! Doesnt matter if it's silly o'clock - whoever drives up seems to have a mobile disco going!
  • The street we live in is quite busy and the noise can sometimes be a nightmare. Only yesterday at 0700, three "travelling type" gents decided to park right outside our house, leave their engines running and have a loud chat over the noise of their transit vans...! I stuck my head out of the window and one of the fellas saw me and just said "Don't worry mate, we're just having a scrappers meeting..." as if I would be totally amused! I just shouted back "Well f**k off and have it outside your own house you inconsiderate chunt"... at which, they swiftly left!

Something else that gets my back up is when someone is leaving very early for work and think that everyone else needs to be up at that time so they sit with their diesel engine running while they drink their brew...! I don't like wasting eggs but sometimes its just necessary... and makes me laugh!
