    Hi,

If you search this forum for 'San Francisco' you'll get answers to all your questions and also the best web sites to use for information, recommendations and booking.

We usually stay somewhere near Fishermans Wharf which we quite enjoy although others find it quite tacky. If you go slightly away from the Wharf up Polk Street there are many small cafes and restaurant off the tourist track. Bay Area has lots to do and good public transport.

    Enjoy.
    Nice to save.

We went to San Francisco last year and we had a car but we mainly used the trams. They were an experience in them selves. I went with my husband, son of 19 and daughter of 15.

We started our holiday in San Francisco and travelled to Yosemite Park then Vegas, La and back to San Francisco.

Yosemite is amazing you can't really explain how great it is, we even went on the 2 hr horse ride (not my husband thought, not brave enough). I heard some one say while we were at Yosemite that once you have been you will always want to go back and it's true.

My husband and sone went to Alcatraz and loved it they also went on a trip around the harbour which cost I think about $10-$12 each which they also liked (my daughter and myself not very good on boats!)

Hope you have a wonderful time we did. We went because we wanted to go to places that we have seen on the T.V and in films and we did.

We hired a Tandem from the Wharf and cycled across the bridge then back again. You could carry on and catch the ferry back for a full day out. Very good day out but only get a Tandem if you have got the patience and experience to ride it - it is very hard.

Did you Know: It costs more than £325,000 a day to run the lifeboat service? (with no government funding) Please donate to the RNLI

I would recommend Yosemite but I am not sure you will have time only going for 3 days. Alcatraz was fab, very interesting but you really need to book your tickets a day in advance. We were really disapointed with Golden Gate Park. Getting around by bus was really easy. The trams are packed but you need to do it at least once!

Don't forget Chinatown, you will be amazed even just walking down the main street. There is also the baseball park at McCovie cove, the winding Lombard street, downtown, there are places to visit all over the city, 3 days is never enough, I have been twice and would still like to go back for all the bits I missed.

You should take into account the a trip to Yosemete while definitly well worth it is a full day even for just a basic tour.

Public transport is great and you can get round a lot easier than if you try to do it by car, riding the trams is a must.

Thankyou all very very much for all your kind help.

What websites would you recommend to book alcatraz from ?

I would really like to do Yosemite but don't really know if we will be able to fit it in 3 days in San Francisco?

Any suggested itinaries for the 3 day trip, we land at 1pm I think and leave on our 4th day there at midday ?

We booked our trips on Expedia before we went. (just put your dates in and select San Fran and it will bring up a page of tours etc.)

We did the Grand City Tour which includes Alcatraz one day , then we did the Monterey and Carmel tour on another day and on yet another day we did the Yosemite tour. All well worth doing especially Yosemite , the scenery is amazing.

So that's 3 days worth of trips , but it depends whether you'd want to do a trip every day or if you'd want to spend any time in San Fran for shopping etc :undecided
