I'm amazed that there aren't much much more cases of buyers just receiving the goods and then claiming to have never received them and getting a refund too. It seems to be so easy to do from teh buyers perspective.
Amazingly, i've sent nearly 200 things out and am yet to have a problem, although i've got some higher value items in auction at the moment and am just waiting to be scammed, lol.
Most people are honest, I sell a range of low to high value items and usually only send the bigger parcels tracked. In upwards of 30,000 transactions there have been less than a handful of anyone I considered to have been lying about non receipt. Surprising how it often seems that the sellers who are open about their mistrust of buyers end up with the most problems.

It's called 'track and trace' and you can see when it's left the post office and where it's headed, you then have a wait for it to update as signed for. I don't know why youre saying differently?

It is called 'recorded signed for' not 'track and trace'.

It is not called track and trace other than by people under the misconception that that is what it is.

The search facility on the Royal Mail website 'track and trace' is useable for all of their products which have a reference/barcode such as Special Delivery or Royal Mail Tracked, these are tracked services.

Recorded delivery is just a record of delivery, not tracked.

Refer to the link in Soolins post.

what happens inbetween if it doesnt arrive/update?
    theres why its not tracked
  • The problem you have is that if a buyer makes any sort of claim for non receipt and you havent sent the item "recorded" you WILL have to pay out a refund.

At least with recorded, however anyone deems it to be trackable or not!, you can get a claim back from the post office for the value of your goods - subject to the £46 pound limit. This takes time but eventually you will be square with the house.

Recorded will put off a lot of scammers. Charge for recorded delivery in your postgage and point out in your description why youre doing it. Protrection and proof of delivery. Works every time for me.

Recorded puts me off because people are charging me an extra pound because they think I might scam them.

That is going to damage your ratings, or simply encourage buyers to avoid you.

If you can't handle the fact your buyers might scam you, find an easier venue to sell on face-to-face where you can at least know your buyer has their goods. It's your paranoia, not your buyers' dishonesty, that is fuelling your desire to sell on eBay but treat your buyers as thieves. Many people, honest or not, when faced with obstructive security arrangements, will object, so you are not only putting off scammers, but probably putting off genuine purchasers as well who don't like being treated as such.

Most losses in the post are genuine and recorded is too much to pay to get the same service as first/second class standard mail. It also causes hassle at my end, from paying for something that is not vfm from my POV to having to go to a DO to collect an item, which for some people is a trek, particularly those who lack mobility and purchase online because of that. For a cheapo item it's nonsensical. For more valuable items, Special Delivery does the job a lot better.

That sounds like an easy way for a seller to lose their account ' I use recorded as I think all you buyers are scammers and i need to be able to claim from RM'

As the statement is also incorrect it flags up to scammers that you don't understand Royal Mail and I think it will actually attract scammers and not deter them.

Please read the sticky postage thread on this forum and familiarise yourself as to what postage services actually do, and the amount of compensation available.

Recorded will put off a lot of scammers
and even more potential buyers. With recorded you're pretty much giving Royal Mail money for nothing.
