Could that have happened to both radiators at the same time? Seems a little coincidental is all.

Indeed, don't build up your hopes. This has just been a process of elimination. There is a limit to what can be done without experience and test equipment. As I said 32A breakers don't trip easily* unless there was a definite short circuit.

*Can be overloaded but would require in excess of 8kW continuously for a long enough period. Unlikely in summer. I guess only you know how much heavy load you have had connected.

Still a little puzzled at your original description of a short circuit in the fuse-box. Could have been anywhere.

And I am not convinced that these are storage heaters.

The fuse will drop out. Replace with a known good 13A fuse.
Replace it with a fuse of the same rating as the one that comes out, it may or may not be 13A.

Yes a good point which I carelessly overlooked:D, but if being pedantic the current carrying capacity of the connecting flex would govern the safe fuse selection, not the rating that some person had previously, possibly incorrectly, used.

Note for the OP, look for and post the heater rating from the data plate.

... I'm renting, does that make any different? ...

    Yes!

Contact the LL/managing agent asap. You won't have to pay a penny :). It's all part of the rent you pay.
  • Just an update. The maintenance guy came round today whilst I was at work (my partner was home) and managed to fix the problem in 5 minutes. From what I've been told he flipped the switches in the fuse box a number of times until the power to the radiators came back on.

Yes, I do not know what type of radiators they are but I took an estimated guess (that they were storage heaters) based on what information I could find. I am not well versed in electrical matters (this is my first flat), I can only guess at what happened.

Thanks to those with good advice. I was terrified of another big bill that I wouldn't be able to afford but it ended up not even costing me a penny.

But resetting the MCB's does not cure the issue that caused them to trip in the first place...they're doing that as a safety feature to protect you and your property.
