Probably not hugely relevant to this but I kind of think that the kindle fire is just a little bit late to launch in the uk. I would have bought last year when launched in USA but bought an iPad when realised there would be the delay. They haven't really done anything to make me consider switching.
I have the kindle 3G keyboard, use it for holidays etc and the ability to do basic searching etc is useful, I even did a tesco shop to be delivered in Ireland on it, you wouldn't want to use it everyday but ok when needs must
How old is ops daughter? What kind of budget do you have in mind and what functionality do you want her to have, access to Internet, games apps etc as well as books?0 -

They are competing more with the Google Nexus rather than directly with the iPad really.
People who want an iPad will buy an iPad, those that are looking at cheaper Android based tablets now have another option to consider.0 -

Download books anywhere...... I would go for a kindle 3G keyboard. Honestly don't know if the non keyboard ones have 3G. You wouldn't need wifi then, you could literally be sitting in the beach abroad and download a book to it.
If she doesn't mind second hand you might pick up a bargain as people consider upgrading to newer models0 -

One consideration is reading in bed in the dark (unusual, but I find myself doing this with my phone quite often.) Most of the cheaper models don't have backlit screens so this proves impossible.0
