One consideration is reading in bed in the dark (unusual, but I find myself doing this with my phone quite often.) Most of the cheaper models don't have backlit screens so this proves impossible.

unless you use a cover with integrated light or clip on light.

Kindle e-ink screens are far more restful on the eyes than a lit screen when reading in the dark, and also easy to read in full sunlight.

There have been studies that using lit screens can have a bad effect on sleep - LINK
  • A major thing for me is the battery life. The new Kindle Fire is 11 hrs where as the older Kindle is weeks. Indeed I've just read 7 books on holiday without charging my Kindle once. Mine is the Keyboard 3G but to be honest I've never been in a situation where I need to download a book from a beach or any other remote place. The keyboard is mildly useful if you are going to web browse etc but if your like me and just want a good e-reader Kindle Touch !

ChrissyG, have you considered the Kobo ereaders?
We went for them above Kindles because here in London we have a very good library service inline for ebooks..so we just download library books straight onto the Kobo.
You can get library books on the Kindle, but it involves a lot of faffing about changing the format of the ebook file etc, whereas they go straight onto the Kobo with no problems at all. Saves me loads of money as I don't need to keep buying ebooks.

Also, on the Kindle Vox you can download the Kindle app from the Android play store and get all of the bargains from amazon you see posted on these boards.

  • does the basic kindle not have a back light ? Will I need to go for the kindle touch to get a back lit screen for reading in the dark ? Do not need one with a keypad so was thinking of the touch. Thanks for any help. Its all new to me too.
  • Only the new Kindle Fire's have back light. I tried reading with my iPad backlit and it killed my eyes after an hr. It's personal but having never read a paper book in the dark I couldn't see why I'd want to use an ereader in the dark just because I might be able too. There will always be arguments to consider other platforms such as Kobo etc but the Amazon offering is very compelling long term, the ability to move from device to device seamlessly keeping all your purchases. Also I have bought many books for nothing or a few pence which are available on Amazon but not on Kobo and as an author I know which platform I would chose to release on. It's the same with Apple iBooks, I looked at that at the start but haven't been back there for about a year as everything is on Amazon and is usually cheaper. People tend to go for other platforms because of the price point of the item not because they provide a better service overall. A Kindle Touch is the way I'd go if I were buying today, battery life kills the Kindle fire for me, an ereader needs to be like a book, ready when you are and not need charging everyother day.

Maybe go for a Kindle with a keyboard - I got the Kindle without the keyboard and typing on it is a NIGHTMARE! Don't get me wrong, I love my Kindle and wouldn't be without it, but wish I had a keyboard.

Only the new Kindle Fire's have back light.
    And the new Kindle Paperwhite:

I went through them all yesterday and for reading books the best one is still the keyboard one as it has 3g. I would be lost without mine now, it's my best mate :)
You can get a clip onlight for a quid at the poundshop, but I've never needed to use one.

Many smartphones have wifi hotspot capability, which means you can hook up your kindle via the phone. Personally, it would mean I wouldn't need 3g. Just my personal opinion though.
