Monitor Question

Hi, after much deliberation i have decided to buy a 19" TFT monitor, either this one

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hanns-LCD-Silver-Black-DVI/dp/B000GYHS6Y/sr=11-1/qid=1163676936/ref=sr_11_1/026-4231777-8225215?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

or this one

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/117804

as you can see the difference is widescreen, i've never used a widescreen monitor before, and it's probably good for films but will it look normal when using it to search the net and stuff, or will it have black lines down the side and just be a normal screen?

What about watching stuff that isn't in widescreen format? I don't use my PC for DVDs/Games so would i be better getting the 'regular' one?

Many thanks

This is how a web browser appears in widescreen format:

It's a matter of preference. I like widescreen.

As you rightly guessed, not all web sites/pages are written to support the widescreen format (for varying reasons).

Sometimes there are 'white' (or coloured) lines down either side, or the right side only, or none at all depending on the website - see fullsize screenshots (1440x900 res) PC Advisor forums, BBC homepage, MSE forums (reduced image quality as they weren't getting uploaded at their original size).

I would definitely recommend a widescreen one whatever you do on your PC. As you've never used a widescreen before it may take a little getting used to, but after a while you won't notice the difference & you'll probably loathe the standard 4:3 format if you ever use it again. Just make sure your graphics card supports it though. Also see this recent thread for the advantages (mostly) of widescreen.

I have the widescreen Hanns.G you linked to. It is very good for the money IMO. G

cool, so everything shows up as normal then? I was worried that i would get black lines down the side like you do with some laptops

Edit - Posted before i'd read GoofyGat's reply, thanks for the help,

what about playing video files? will it stretch it out of proportion or have lines down the side?
