Should I make claim on travel insurance or phone insurance

Hi,

I lost my mobile phone abroad and I don't know whether to claim on my travel insurance or mobile insurance (LSG). Both come with my bank account and each has an excess.

I also lost my iPod and I will be claiming this on my travel insurance.

I have reported the loss to the insurance company and orange.

I don't want to end up paying the excess twice , given that i will have to pay excess on my ipod anyway but from postings I have read , I may get very little cash value from my travel insurance . I am currently out of contract but on a rolling month contract with orange.

My phone is a bb bold which i got it new 24 months ago.

Thanks

My advice would be to claim on the travel insurance, however; as you have claimed for your lost iPod, make sure you check how much the excess is.

I'd speak to your bank who would be able to advise.

First check that they both have sufficient limits per claim.

If one wouldn't cover the full value them claim off the other.

Otherwise claim off the one with the lower excess.

Whichever you claim off, they will want to know about your other policy anyway to involve the other insurer in the claim/payout.
  • You will more than likely only receive the value of the phone and iPod having taken off wear and tear. Check with your insurer as you may have to pay two lots of excesses, or you may only pay one excess if you claim both through the travel insurance.
I work for a travel insurance provider.
