Or you could look into a Visitor Oyster Card (or if you're coming back within two years, get a normal Oyster) - see the tfl website for details. At the moment, they are giving out free Oyster cards (normally £3 a pop as a deposit) and all you have to do is charge it up with credit when you get there. Makes life a LOT cheaper!!

I have looked at the oyster and travlecard. Can someone confirm that if I get an oyster card it will cap my daily costs to the price of that of a railcard? I am going for three days and while one day I will probably be hopping here there and everywhere, the other 2 days I might only make a couple of journeys.

I think the only catch is that you have to pay a £3 refundable deposit for the oyster, and that you don't get a discount on river journeys.

    Have I got this right?

I got a day travelcard when I went the other week. I was only about £5 and that covered buses as well as the tube. Also, children under 11 travel free too, which I didn't know :T

The Oyster PAYG card will cap your daily spend to 50p less than the equivalent railcard. Only point to note that it is not valid on (most) national rail journeys - eg to Greenwich or Hampton Court - whereas a paper travelcard is.

The PAYG Oystercard means you can't use 2for1 offers

A travelcard - whether on paper (1 or 3 days) or Oystercard (7 days or longer) means you can

Aha well that might be a clincher then. By the way, is Oyster PAYG valid on DLR?

Yes it is - if going to Greenwich it's best to get off at Island Gardens, walk to the edge of the Thames then take the passenger tunnel to Greenwich

I'm a bit confused after reading this thread. So it's better to get the paper travel card than to get the PAYG Oyster card?
