TV License in a Student House

Options
I wasn't sure whether to post this on this board or in the student board.

A friend of mine has just moved into a student house for September and he was wondering or students get any discounts or cheaper rates on their tv licenses? (he is in a 4 bedroom house with 5 TVs)

Thanks in advance

From the TV licensing website (www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/for-your-home/students-aud1/#Box1):
If there’s a joint tenancy agreement for the whole house, you may only need one licence. However, you may need your own licence if your accommodation is self-contained – i.e. you have exclusive access to washing facilities or you have your own entrance to the property. If you’re not sure whether or not you need one, please contact us.

chances are you will need only one licence for the whole house, there are no discounts for students, but you can claim back the quarter you don't use, therefore if you buy the licence in October you can claim back a few months next June/July (not sure of the exact dates)

also don't bother with a direct debit TV licence just pop to the local shop and you can buy a licence there for cash, therefore it is done for the year, there can be no difficult people with no money trying to say they can't afford it that month, much better if they all just chip in for one payment right at the beginning.

...this is CRUCIAL! Don't get stung like my daughter did ...she ended up paying for the license on a monthly basis in her name and never did get all the others to pay their share!!
  • In this case, One TV License is required i.e. a joint tenancy agreement. Everybody should pay it all in once to lessen the cost.
