What would you do. Manager from bank giving out information

I come from a small town and the builder I normally use knows the bank manager at a well known bank.
I was speaking to the builder yesterday about a mutual friend and it turns out that the bank manager has been talking about the mutual friend to the builder and has told him various information about this person's personal life and also how much is in his savings account.
I know the builder could be making this up, but for various reasons (long long story) I am certain that he is not. I am also certain he has not "got the wrong end of the stick"
Although I think the builder is wrong to gossip, I am more concerned about this bank manager.
I am not sure whether I should do anything.
I am not in touch with the mutual friend.
Would love opinions on this.

The only person who can really make a specific complaint is the mutual friend, so you have to decide whether to tell them what you have heard, and if so how much detail to go into, and leave it to them to take forward.

If you also have accounts at this bank then you may want to consider if your own personal details are safe or whether you should move elsewhere.

As you have no first hand evidence I would say nothing and do nothing except consider my own accounts. You could run the risk of being accused of slandering the manager and the builder is unlikely to confirm that he gave you the information.
  • Client confidentiality and the Data Protection Act means the bank manager deserves to be hauled over the coals for this. I've visited a bank before now and a near neighbour's business accounts were clearly visible during my appointment, negligence but nowadays clearly unacceptable.
  • Speak to the mutual friend as he may not want to be risking the information getting around the town and if you bank there consider if you want to stay with them too.

In terms of official action, as it isnt your data that has been spread your options are more limited, though you may still be able to make a complaint to the Information Commissioners Office. As has been said however it really is hearsay with no evidence
  • Many thanks for the opinions which are all saying the same thing really, and it is more or less what I was thinking.
The mutual friend is actually an old boyfriend of mine who I was with for some years and he would be horrified at this. In any event I have not seen him for 30 years! Hence getting in touch would be difficult.
I am just furious with the bank manager.
I have no accounts there but if I did they would be closed down right away.

Most of what I was told was just idle tittle tattle and gossip. However, a lot of what was said would be unlikely to have come from anyone other than who worked in the particular branch especially when he was told how much was in a particular bank account.

Unless you are with the same bank, I'd say nothing if i were you.

Well i would contact ex friend and see if they can confirm some of the details. As if this mananger has done this once, he may well have done it many times.
Either way he needs to be reported to head office.
Give them the builders details and what he said and let them decide what to do.
