but there are a couple of things i wanted to know, why does a 3 sim work in a Virgin dongle? and will 3 get upset if i use a mobile sim in a dongle?

It works because the dongle is unlocked (it's basically a very stripped down phone).

Will the be upset? Shouldn't think so, unless the T&C's forbid dongle use.
  • Will a 3 dongle sim work in an unlocked Android phone and is it allowed (would be using data only).

Yes it will work, a SIM is a SIM.

Can't think why it wouldn't be allowed.

So you could make a phone call/send a text from it? After all, a SIM is a SIM!

If a sim can be put into some device this doesn't mean that this device is supposed to provide the full functionality. What about, say, a sim card reader?

I realize that; I was just querying Rusty's (rash?) statement :)

It's not out of the question you could make calls on it, depends how Three provision the account.

But it's still a regular SIM as per the ETSI standard.
  • The attitude of 3 to use of a phone SIM in a dongle depends on what you then do with it.

If you use it with a computer for Internet use then if you are on an "unlimited" data deal they may well complain that use with a computer is inappropriate use.

Their meaning of "unlimited" is often from the perspective of what you can do on a phone.

Some deals allow "tethering" which is generally used to mean connecting your computer to the Internet via your phone, some don't.

Occasional use is unlikely to upset 3 even if you are not supposed to use the data for computer use.
