  • What sort of wall is it? If it is just a brick wall you could drill through the pointing, so if you do get in trouble over it, it is an easy fix. No bricks to match up or replace.

Or contact a glazier, see if they can replace on of the panes with a plastic panel that you can drill a hole in and silicone round to seal.

This is the problem with these boards sometimes. There are some very helpful people and useful information here, but sometimes, someone asks a specific question and gets a whole load of other ones answered instead, usually critical.

Some people like air con, some don't. Some people are green, some aren't. Some people break bureaucratic rules, some don't. Some people consider their neighbours, some don't. Whatever, the question was specific enough, if you disagree, why bother replying?!

For the record, I love air con, e.g. at work, I can't stand all the moaning about it being too cold (you can set the temperature) or making you ill (nothing makes me feel worse than being overheated). Each to their own though.

The OP originally said he felt it was a breach of his human rights not to be allowed to drill a hole through the wall to install air con. Though he later edited his post to remove this, it may explain some of the more critical comments. I initially thought this was a troll.

Leew: The main external wall is brick but my wall is an inner concrete with paneling. But it should be fine as there are gaps between the panelling.

We all are sharing the same satellite dish on the roof but thanks for the suggestion.

Southend1: It's very unlikely that has anything to do with it as I promptly removed that intentional exaggeration after realising some people would take it literally.

Sitting in our flat in London, got back this afternoon and with blinds closed it's still 89F:eek:

Now luxuriating in the worked for and desired air con :rotfl:

    .

But the problem is not whether you can, but that its someone else's wall and will if spotted lead to the HA reinstating at their cost, on which you have no choice, and a useless air con with nowhere to vent it.

  • Management has just approved the new plan of using existing ventilation holes.

So presumably I can share the holes for the oven and toilet extractor fans. I still haven't accessed the flat yet but I take it this will be a lot of internal work but it has to be done.

You place the external units against the wall and it's not visible to anyone, including my neighbours.

So really, where's the harm in a drilling a tiny hole and then filling it up when I come to sell? No one would know.

Ah I understand you need a hole to link the pipe that runs between the external & internal units

However mounting the units on the wall is

a; mounting on someone else' s wall

b; an alteration to the exterior of the property

both of which are likely to be a breach of the lease.

    :think:What I suggest is this

If you have a large terrace that you mount them on them- that would not be a breach. If required they can be disguised with a mock planter or similar

If the window frame is demised to you and it's timber drill through that or drill between the frame and the wall.

I'm sorry you disagree that someone deserves to buy whatever they want if they earned the money in a legitimate way from hard work.

    Keep digging... :T
The way this thread started and unfolded I was expecting that you were not the 'type' to be able to comprehend the point being made.

Next time you feel you 'deserve to buy whatever you want' may I suggest a hunting trip in Africa? Shooting Elephants from an air-conditioned Mercedes 4x4 while those lazy locals try not to starve on the wayside is a great feeling.

As mentioned earlier the external unit will just sit neatly on the terrace against the wall without being visible to anyone :)

What a disgusting comment to suggest the point I was making was leaving room for such unethical activities. Considering I made the point of 'legitimately' earning the money, you should have sensibly assumed I would not support spending that money illegitimately.

There's adding some extra comfort to your flat with AC and then there's killing innocent animals for entertainment. As a vegetarian your post was even more unpleasant to read.
