Got Sky, anything better?

Options
Hi all

I currently pay £55 with Sky, just gone up from £42 when a discount offer I had applied to the account has just expired.

I had telephoned and written to Sky to see if they can apply some discount again, and it was a no this year.

My TV package is HD Subscription, Entertainment + Sports.

If I removed Sports I assume it will be around £35 per month, as I can watch any footie games streamed on the net.

Is there anywhere else I can get HD+ inc all general channels such as Sky 1, Living, 5*, Disney Junior etc for less than £35 per month?

I cant get Virgin, and I have had a look a YouView TV and Freeview but cant really make sense of what they are offering.

Also currently I have one of those 'sky eye' things so I can access sky box from upstairs, do any of these alternatives offer that?

Cheers

Thanks

  • Is this any good?

Freeview HD+ I could get two of these, one for upstairs and one for downstairs for approx 5 months worth of Sky subscriptions.

I have one ariel point in the bedroom, would this be a problem for this?

My Sky would be £36.50 without sports.

Does that system get the channels the OP wants (I believe he wants them in HD too?)? They mention Sky 1, Living, 5* and disney junior, if not then it is not a solution.

OP, if you want to reduce costs but still recieve sky 1 all I can suggest is removing the HD sub, you will still get a number of HD channels that are available for free, but not any of the channels you list (I believe).

  • So if I have a HD box but cancel the HD subscription I will still get certain HD channels??

I have recently scrapped sky ( was paying over £40mth)

Now use youview box which has all freeview channels, ability to pause and record (just like sky+)
The youview box also connects to your Internet connection and allows access to catch up tv from bbc, itv, ch4 and ch5. There is also a milkshake (ch5) catch up service as well as skynow which is a paytoview or subscription channel.

I have supplemented this with a Netflix and lovefilm subscription (via cash back sites) and haven't missed sky at all yet. I get Netflix through the wii, and stream lovefilm via laptop connected to tv. It is believed that both of these will come in time to

I don't regret ditching sky at all, am very happy with this box/set up. Talktalk and BT will both be offering youview with boxes with contracts if this is better for you, this will have access to extra content
  • I have now cancelled Sky Sports and HD and I am now paying £24.26 per month.

I am with TalkTalk and I can get a YouView box for £50 (installation cost). I would probably have the one for £15 per month which would get me everything I get with Sky at the moment. Saving me a further £10 (as unfortunately I would need the kids programmes for my daughter).

Do they do anything similar like the sky eye so I could have something upstairs so I can access the box downstairs? Otherwise the saving of £10 per month + the £50 installation fee wouldnt be worth the hassle.

You can remote view anything AV, with the youview box you would probably need to use one of these:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triax-Tri-link-kit-Virgin-media-Sky-Freesat-Freeview-Boxes-/270964254552?_trksid=p3284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BIEW%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D21%26pmod%3D270921811020%26ps%3D54

With the cable and eye that is already in place, this would allow you to watch the Sky box, the youview box and freeview in the 2nd location/s

little bit of advice, as an ex sky employee who worked in retentions, we were told if people called looking for/asking for offers they weren't to be given any unless they used the term cancel, leave, cut off etc etc Sky were looking to reduce the "offer hunters" as they were called across the board in all departments, they also introduced the no offers teams as a pilot project - these staff had absolutely no offers to give anyone
