Not a very nice way with words - 'Man up'. I hope you never have to go through it and see how 'un man like' it can make you feel.
I've been there, it's crap, but you can let it wear you down or you can use it as an opportunity to move on and try something new. Sorry if you don't like my words, but I stand by them - the only way to beat these situations is to rise above it.0 -
This is the second time for him, we are trying to look at the positives. Last time it happened he earned a really good salary and company car etc. but we had a big mortgage and two kids in school. We downsized, bought a small car and paid our mortgage off and kids are now grown up.
Financially we are in a much better position than last time but emotionally he really feels it. With his back (disc problem) he can't do anything that requires lifting or twisting or putting any pressure on the damaged disc - this results in him having to watch while I do all that stuff in the house (not literally but you know what I mean). Therefore his worth 'as a man' is severely dented. Take his job away too and he feels he has nothing. That's what's causing the stress.0 -
It's a very horrid place and I do understand how he feels. My OH had this twice in 3 years, I find out end of this month and my OH could face it again soon. He was only out of work 10 weeks and found this hard (me working, mortgage and young children). I think it affects both genders but men do have the "provider" issue more than us I think.
Cling to the positives - The better financial position etc. Don't let him "brush things under the carpet" - please ask him to get help if he needs to, but do also balance this out with a Mental Health Sickness record. There is really only him and you as his wife can make that decision.
I do feel for you - the older you are the worse the fears of re-employment are. I hope it all works out for you0 -
Sorry one more thought - I don't know how big the company is etc
But is there an Occ Health? If so can he speak to them and maybe even ask for a transfer for the end of him time there to another department?
That way he is trying something new and not sitting with those who were successful.0 -
THere is no connection between the two. If his GP says he is not fit to work (whatever the cause) and issues a certificate saying so he is off sick whether he is being made redundant or not.
If he has a good sick record then what can they say, that someone who is not normally sick happened to be sick in the last weeks of his job. Big deal.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0
