Name and Surname wrong way around

Options
Help please!

I've just booked a 3 way ticket with Qatar airways.
I was careless and have entered the name and surname the wrong way round.
The ticket conditions say name changes are not permitted.
Will this be a problem when travelling?
I'm going to Thailand and Vietnam.

Thanks in advance.

One would think that common sense would come into play here, however with international security threats, something tells me that this may be a problem, especially with the countries in question on return to the UK.

Speaking to Qatar would be the only option I can advise, however be aware that there may be a hefty 'admin fee' for this.

  • Absolutely no need to worry. Has happened to me loads of times over the years with BA, KLM, Emirates and Qatar as well and never had a problem...apparently in Libya (where my employer is based) its common practice to use surnames first on airline bookings. However just be aware that if you only take your passport to the check-in desk, then the airline staff won't find your booking and you'll politely need to remind them that your name is shown the other way around. But i recommend that you do NOT call the airline and tell them of this...there's always a chance you may get some jobsworth who'll cancel your booking unless you pay up.
  • Airlines have done this to me loads of times ( not my mistake ) and it has never been a problem. But I agree, DON'T phone them up!

i think we need to clear something up, both from the OP, and some of the latter comments. Airline reservation systems, and a lot of e-tickets, do actually show surnames first, then the first name (eg SMITH ANDREW/MR). To the OP, is this what it is showing? It may be that you have done everything right, and you are just misreading it. Alternatively, are you addressed on the booking as Mr Andrew (using above example). In which case, it could be a problem.

As for those who have said it is OK to travel even though first name & surname have been revered, i would advise extreme caution on following their advise, and especially by not calling the airline, and checking. It may be that when the airline is called, they simply change the names around FOC. Alternatively, they may just charge you a re-issue fee, or even just put notes into your booking advising the check-in staff of the discrepancy. However in any case, i would be inclined to contact them to find out exactly where you stood.

By all means, follow the advise of those who say nothing, however do it at your own peril, and be prepared for major problems.

You will also be required to provide API to the airline for travel to Qatar, which will then be passed to the Qatar government. As your ticket & passports will not match, this could give even bigger implications.

    Hope this helps.

I did this last year for my name (my fault online) I phoned Opodo as it was a last minute emergency booking, they phoned the airlines to let them know of the mistake so they would know at check in. They said the names could NOT be changed BTW.
Delta had to assist with the check in but no problem there. Only problem was the return journey from USA and Mrs Jobsworth said I couldn't go through security with that boarding pass even tho Delta issued it....manager gave it the okay.
    I think you should phone.

My son went to Thailand 1st week of August during university hols. 2 days before leaving I asked him to check his details on Gulf Air ticket - turned out he had used his short form first name instead of writing down his name exactly as it appears on passport. He panicked and called the airline as the ticket issuer was not interested in the problem. Gulf Air charged him around 50 US dollars to change his name, Laos Air would not allow him to change ticket at all and he had to pay 175.00 again - hard lesson learned after working hard to pay for tickets over summer!

............ all ok in end and he went - but at extra cost of course.

I have had this loads of times (I've lived/worked in the Middle East for many years and flown with all airlines in the region). It is often MR.DAVE for example, and all other variations of printing my christian name, middle name & surname. Never had a problem.
I agree with not contacting the airline as they are very unlikely to change it. Have a great vacation :)

Well as someone who flies 15-20 times a year to get to/from work and been doing this for the last 15 years, i've never had a problem. Many times over the years (i'd estimate at least 30) my name has been shown as baby/frogmella instead of frogmella/baby on the booking and never created any problems at check-in....but then again i don't appear to be a nervous wreck at check-in...if the airline refuses to let me board then not my problem as it was my company who made the booking and they'll always re-book me on the next flight if any issues or reimburse me if i have to buy my own ticket. The only annoying thing is that frequent flyer mileage does not automatically get credited on such bookings, you have to call them up afterwards to get the mileage after explaining the booking error.

I'll repeat what i said before: if you call them beforehand to explain the error you're saying to them "ooops my name is shown incorrectly on my booking but hey charge me whatever you want to correct it" and some airline jobsworth may very well take you up on your offer. DON'T DO IT !!!
