Barn find, mustang!

Options
paid a visit to a friend of mine today, he's bought a mustang 1979 on LHD import. images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSINjI6L8H4hC_fy7B2SHRbjBArMYFI6shxGzz5zDjCNogCl2MlTQ simular to this one.
a genuin barn find, that has an interesting story so i'm told behind it as follows.

first owner from new, bought the car in massetussets(SP?), shortly after his job took him to sweeden, instead of selling car out there, he imported it to sweeden, it was kept in dry storage untill registered out there, and wasnt really needed or used so was then dry stored after 3 years (early 80s), the fellow met a woman in sweden, had a baby and when she grew up she learned to drive in it and used for college, she then got a job and bought a new car, mustang went back into storage, the daughter then met a fellow from england, and she moved here, they bought a house and all was well untill the bloke did a runner, all housein her name and he took the car they had, as it goes, she made a call to her dad saying she needed a car for work etc, but being broke couldnt buy one, so he apparently sent over the mustang! had it GB registered and altered for GB regs, then up untill 2005 when she sold her house (in middle of no mans land) put the mustang in the barn and left it there with old style v5c and keys along with a old morris two tractors, then a few weeks ago a fellow found it, and put it on ebay,. now my friend owns it.

it absolutly solid underneath, it runs without skipping heart beat, all that was wrong is that bodywork was a bit scabby, and a sticky brake caliper.

weve been looking all over for a uk average price of these cars but have found NONE!.

its got a V8 in it, prob the 5.0L engine, rear wheel drive. the interior is fine although a slight rip of leather to the drivers boulster and the rubber bumpers etc have bowing in it.

he's trying to gauge a resale price on it, bought it £500 and spent about £150 on it, but doesnt want to spend too much if its worth nothing, its not something i have seen here in the UK, ive seen camero's, trans am's, a few 60's mustangs and early 90's mustangs but no this its quite unique to say the least.

anyone know of one out there and what prices they go for in running good working order?

You won't see many because no one wants one. The good period of early Mustangs (and all American muscle cars) was mid-sixties to 1973 when fuel prices, insurance and legislation conspired to make post-1973 cars cr!p from which it took a long time to recover.

That also appears to be a particularly undesirable notchback rather than fastback coupe.

www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk has lots of Mustangs listed, but a gaping hole devoid of any cars from 1973 until 1990.

www.carandclassic.co.uk has one 1979 listed but it's a Pace Car version, in the US and an optimistic £5900.

May not be very nice, but it could be of some interest to a banger racer, probably not worth the £650 invested though.

If it runs and looks sound i would be tempted to offer £300.

I would MOT it add a nitrous kit and see how quickly i could get it up the strip
    before it blows up.

    Its not a desirable car.

If it was an early one as mentioned above then. It would have queues of people waiting give you money.

I like the shape of the new one also though. Harks back to the early days.
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • looking at the car i think it shares the same chassis plateform as a capri.

the pace car is in america, has a inline 4cyl turbo engine not the v8 5.0l.

theres a guy over at mocgb that has a pace car of the same era, but has a shorter rear end on it no engine and in bits for £1000 a rolling shell basically.

but it does look like a very narrow market. seems i'll have to give my friend the web addy to mocgb and see if there interest there. if not then it looks like this v8 lump will sit in a capri with ease, mmmm, getting some idea's here, NOPE ATRIX DONT...
  • I think you have probably got the right idea for it rob it for bits !

It is sad to see it happen but like others have said its the wrong model unless somebody is looking for one of those (you never know it takes all sorts)

It's not the same platform as a Capri.

There was however, the Capri Perana in South Africa which was pretty much what you're contemplating.

It depends how long he keeps it for.
Every car will be a classic one day.
    It's already 33 years old.
  • I wouldn't break it, someone somewhere might want one and have fond memories of it.

Ebay with a reserve or gumtree with a fixed price.

well, ive had another look at it today, and i must say, its really solid underneath, theres been no welding at all anywhere and no rust in the arches etc so to preserve that its had another coat of shultz, its been stood since 2005 going by the tax disc, so there surface rust on the discs and calipers, but a wire brush and a lick of high heat paint should sort that issue out. it just made 69k mark, rear seats and pasenger seat feels like new and never sat on, theres a few cracks in the dash where the front speakers are located but that could always be sorted with a speaker grill.

i was also wrong about engine type after looking at it properly, its a v6 i seen it yesterday under a polythene dust sheet but was uncovered today.

the intension he has with it is to sell it on to a enthusiast of amercan vehicles. if it doesnt sell, it will be stored for while with the intension taking it to carshows next year and try and generate some interest in it that way if theres room to store it, as he has 2 land rover ES's, either that it will be broken appart and scrapped for weight.

I love Mustangs or at least most Mustangs but that one is just plain ugly/boring, If everyone else thinks like me then that may be why you dont see that model over here or indeed on the streets in the USA.

Thats not a dig just an observation of why it might not be worth very much
